Could Germany have won WW2?

Activists built a Holocaust memorial outside a far-right politician’s home in Germany

Activists have built a mini model of Berlin’s Holocaust memorial outside the home of far-right politician Björn Höcke in Bornhagen. The move is to troll the lawmaker after he caused uproar in January earlier this year when he said Germany should not have such a memorial in its capital city.

Höcke, one of the senior members of the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party, said “we Germans… are the only nation in the world that has planted a monument to shame in the heart of its capital.”

Now he’ll be reminded of the murder of the death of six million Jews every day, after the “Centre for Political Beauty” collective secretly rented the house next door ten months ago, and yesterday erected a smaller replica of the Berlin memorial to the European Jews murdered by the Nazis.

The original is a made up of 2,700 concrete slabs representing a cemetery; the miniature one has 26, and is clearly visible from Höcke’s property.

It's a reasonable point that the Holocaust is a thing of shame for Germany, other countries don't have monuments to horrendous acts that they've committed in the center of their capital city.

I believe Hungary protected it's Jewish population until late in the war when they were occupied by Germany, but it's not necessarily about just the Holocaust, generally countries don't have memorials to genocides/atrocities that they've committed. I'm not saying Germany should or shouldn't have the memorial, simply that the guy has a reasonable point.

I started this post quite uneducated on the matter, or forgetting what I had learnt many years ago....

I have watched many videos on YouTube lately...

The Germans we're so one dimensional with their thinking.... Like when they invaded Russia and Ukraine, and we're welcomed with open arms by the ukraines, who would have fought alongside them, even if Germany where to slaughter them later, when not of use..... Instead they starve them out and refuse any help.

I have had a fascination towards Hitler and the war... The last video I watched showed Ukrainian Jews naked, in a que, holing their children, waiting for death..... It absolutely, effected me, especially having children of my own..

Know matter my curiosity towards the war, I'm happy such an evil twisted person met his maker.

I wonder how German people of today think of Hitler?... Do you think children in schools learn the true evil of their dictator?

The horrors of WW2 and the collective shame of the country are drummed into German children each and every year throughout their schooling. There's no way the people of Germany will forget it in a hurry.*

Most German people today think the same about Hitler as most Brits do — he was a truly evil man who convinced a nation to commit heinous acts of attrition that should never be repeated.

The biggest worry to my mind is that people around the world forget or discount the lessons of the past. The recent rise of nationalism and the rise in inequality both breed the same resentments and fears that led to the rise of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Communist Russia. We only need a 'proper depression' for those underlying fears to turn into something much more acute and widespread.

*source, my wife is German.

Communist, Fascist and other terminologies towards how leaders dictate others should live, could you explain these two please? In a little more detail, so I understand... I apologize, if this comes across a bit thick!

:)

It seems that most people and myself thought Germany suddenly attacked Russia for no reason at all... But from reading and listening to a Hiltlers speech, Hitler believed from information he gathered that Russia was about to invade Germany and had arranged large Armies at the ready to pounce on a weakend Germany who was all ready fighting on other fronts..

Would you agree with this? As I have always been baffled how a great mind of Hiltlers could have made such a silly mistake..

I think the main reason was logistical. Hitler wanted Russia for its oil and a place for his race to live. One thing is for sure if we were not a island Hitler would have wiped us off the face of the earth and if Japan never attacked America things might have been different.

Aren't the warheads a development of Hitler during the war itself, as probably the only solution which would have led him to success?
They are, however they are also something that was going to be invented anyway (similar to how jet engines were invented in two countries at the same time), and the USSR/USA were always going to emerge as the superpowers of the 20th century. No WW2 would delay confrontation but when it occurred it would likely be even more devastating as the weapons would be better and the restraint less.

NB: IIRC the story of Command and Conquer was that somebody went back in time and killed hitler, delaying the next world war until the atomic age.

Nuclear warheads? the development of nuclear as a weapon goes back before Hitler/WW2 (though it was during the war that many countries realised the potential significance) though I believe the Germans were the first ones to develop anything even close to a long range ballistic missile that could deliver them to another country without having to use aircraft, etc.

Not read the thread but my belief is this.

Early in the war germany were dominant with weak tanks, but their airforce was the leader, and their dive bombers were very effective at removing obstacles to the ground forces.
Dive bombers were also proven effective against ships.
Subs were effective early war as well, they lacked in numbers tho.

The first question is could england have been invaded after the fall of france, in my opinion yes if the RAF was neutered. Some people claim it would be impossible because of the royal navy, but the royal navy in 1940 was not in a position to blockade the english channel, as an example when the dutch royal family was en route to england in a ship, it was all done hush hush, the navy were scared in the north sea of been sunk, not the actions of a dominant navy. A ship close by did in fact get sunk by some german subs. Also in 1940 anti sub tech was weak, so the germans e.g. could have made a path for the invasion force to cross with each side of the path flanked by subs waiting for approaching destroyers etc. and dive bombers as well on standby. Once on land beating a beaten down land army would have been easy.

With england taken out the picture suddenly things change a lot, all those large bombing campaigns against germany suddenly are not possible and is no staging area for a normandy landing.

So what about russia?

Russia initially faced almost the full brunt of germany as was minimal forces in the west in 1941 and they managed to hold on, when germany lost momentum late 1941, the luftwaffe was grounded, so lack of air support for the first time in ww2 showed that germans land forces suffered massively without air support, late 1941 they were also suffering from logistics issues, getting fuel etc. to the front line. If moscow was taken would russia have collapsed? I think that depends if stalin was captured. If russia did not collapse with fall of moscow then germany would need to conquer east russia, with their logistical problems that would have been a big ask.
With england taken out the picture, americans would definitely be supplying russia, and probably even more so than they were actually supplied as there would be no england to supply as well. Americans and any evacuated english forces would also possibly be landing in russia at some point as well to attack germany from the east. Bombing campaigns could be launched from russia as well, although I think stalin would only agree to it if russia on last legs.
As the war progressed germany fuel issues became more and more an issue which grounded planes and left tanks abandoned, in the actual war, in 1943 onwards a lot of german losses were due to having to abandon tanks and also lack of air support.
What if russia was not invaded? I think russia would have invaded germany, one of the reasons the invasion of england got cancelled was russia was building up forces on the front lines and the invasion of russia was to preempt that.

With all this in mind I think a considered win for germany would be this.

Invade england successfully. (england refused several peace offers so would never have agreed to peace)
Manage to take out moscow and kill or capture stalin.
Then at this point sue for peace with america and any remaining allies to end the war at that point. Leaving eastern russia sort of like southern france. Still partially independent.

Quite a long video but recent one that goes into a bit of detail especially in respect to uboat efficiency:

but the royal navy in 1940 was not in a position to blockade the english channel, as an example when the dutch royal family was en route to england in a ship, it was all done hush hush, the navy were scared in the north sea of been sunk, not the actions of a dominant navy.

I'm not sure that is evidence of lack of ability if necessary to blockade the English channel - the navy was stretched thin covering a large part of the globe at the time including trying to command strategic points like the Straits of Gibraltar and so on which could have been pulled back if it came to it to defend England.

I'm not convinced though that the navy could have been as effective against an invasion as claimed if the Germans had gotten air supremacy as they could have relatively effectively controlled a corridor for the crossing even though they stood no chance of commanding the sea in general - a lot would have hinged on the exact timing of the availability of bombs with sufficient armour penetration to use against the more advanced Royal Navy ships though something that in the actual timeline didn't come into play soon enough but could have feasibly been brought forward with a need for it.

My feeling on this has always been that Hitler coming to power wasn't the worst thing that could have happened during the 20th century, and the Allies winning WW2 was not the best.

In particular, allowing the Soviet Union to win.

I do not know if Churchill ever did say "We killed the wrong Pig" but the sentiment is still a valid one.
