Hi all, I am looking to change my old paper licence for a photo licence. The reason being is that I am finding that more and more things need photo ID and I haven't got a passport at the moment, so it is cheaper to get a photo driving licence.

I was wondering the people who done it do you need to have the photos signed or is it not required due to just upgrading? Thanks in advance for any advice.

AFAIK you only need them signed for original issue if you don't have a passport to take it from. You can now use them to update each other online. You're just updating your pictures for a reissue, so shouldn't need it signed. Worth phoning DVLA though.

The paper counterpart to a driving licence has had no legal status since 8 June 2015.

If you have been driving since then and don't have a photo license, you have been on the road illegally.

That's great but OP has a paper license not a counterpart (he'd have a photo card if so) which is a very old license type and is perfectly valid and legal.

Thanks all for the advice. I will phone DVLA and find out for sure, but I took it to assume you don't need signed photos to upgrade. I got my driving back in 1995, just before the photo licences.

Old thread i know, but online says different answers for what i am trying to find out, the situation is, my brother has the original paper licence only, and has no passport etc, so will be updating by post, so my question is, as its his first photo licence, when he sends photo in, does it need to be signed on back, i see different reports saying yes and no, thx
