Will the UK ever scrap the MOT test?

seen an article on various news sites today and couldn’t believe what I was reading. “Time to scrap outdated MOT test ministers told” “drivers are wasting £250mill a year on rip off checks and unnecessary tests”
Link for anyone wanting to read

Poor drivers having to waste £40 of there hard earned money once per year to ensure there car is in good working order. How ridiculous it’s part of driving to make sure your car is safe to take out on the road!
I shudder to think the state some cars on the road would end up in if they don’t need an MOT. Majority of people I know don’t check there car at all out of ignorance and would be lost without the annual MOT test telling them there tyres are bald, brakes need changing or various lights or indicators are not working etc. At least the AA have chimed in and said it would be a dangerous move if the MOT test was abolished.
It Got me thinking though could this actually happen eventually over here given how many states in America have scrapped there equivalent?

Tried to read the "neoliberal" "study". Got as far as:

garbage "study" said:
The actual inspection price varies by garage, with lower MOT prices usually signalling higher markups on the replacement parts

Then I had to stop reading, as that alone was a laughable statement.

£250 mil for basic safety seems reasonable.
We could cancel the smart meter roll out and have £11bn to play with.
Or cancel HS2 and save £55bn.
Priorities.

MOTs are two years here (cyprus) and I doubt they all actually 'pass'. Some of them just look like plain death traps.

My mechanic was convinced my previous car was a dodgy MOT.

So no, it's not a good idea.

You should see some of the cars in the States where they don’t have their version of MOT.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Some of the death traps I've seen on Jalopnik are ridiculous. I'm talking cars with 3 wheels, cars that have been cut to bits with a jaws of life, cars with no doors, cars with a bucket as a seat and a spanner as a steering wheel, etc.

Sadly humans are retards and need protecting from themselves and others.

Scrap it? Hell no! When you see some of the dumpsters on the roads and the disgusting things with blue / black smoke pouring out the back the only positive I take from seeing them whilst holding my breath is that hopefully its next MOT will get it off the road.

I have seen a rust bucket of a car where the roof was sliced off, no windscreen and now doors.

Actually someone I know drove around in a Toyota something with a cracked windscreen. Not a chip but a massive crack.

How about this one? What do you think this would do to a pedestrian? Mince meat.

Check out my post above, some mental stuff out there. A jack as a wheel. A jack.

No MOTs where I live, and the state of some vehicles is unbelievable.

Bulges/very deep cuts in tyres, no lights working, cars bodged together from 3-4 crashed ones, others with no brakes, only a handbrake. I've seen some literally break in half / have axles fall off in the middle of the road.

I'm no fan of the "lets fail this perfectly decent car because the airbag light is on" type stuff, but some form of test is eminently sensible, and I can't see it being removed anytime soon.

Enough people already drive around on bald tyres and crap brakes even with testing. TBH they should scrap the 3 year MOT-free period for new cars as well because quite a lot of them would fail.

They don't have one in the US and you should see the death traps some of them drive around.
