Will the UK ever scrap the MOT test?

People will run about it utter death traps if there is no MOT, my mates a mechanic and shown me some shockers thats came in.

Most folk dont want to spend much on there cars, they dont know and dont care how they work and many of the things left to the MOT comes round are safety issues like...
Lights, one in three round my way have busted lights somewhere on there cars
Tyres, bald tyres are a norm with tight drivers - i have lost count of how many drivers have no tread or cuts/bulges on tyres i see round here.
Exhaust systems with holes in them are common on old crap and of course the classic brakes.... pads being nothing but metal on metal... disks with cracks through them..

Yep lets scrap the MOT.

christ its bad enough when you see the state of some of the taxis around here and their tested every 6 months and thats supposed to be professional drivers.

Take a couple of minutes when you next park in any decent sized car park and look at the state of the tyres on the cars either side of you.

The ones with bald tyres are usually the ones you see in local ditches when winter hits.

jesus, given the state of some cars on the road with a valid mot certificate god only knows how bad things would get if they didn't test.

in ni we have the dvla test centres, so it's much harder to have a questionable mot certificate but even then there's some right shockers out there (i should know i bought one)

the day they scrap the mot is the day i'm buying a ******* tank

I'll be in the turret please.

I have seen a rust bucket of a car where the roof was sliced off, no windscreen and now doors.

Actually someone I know drove around in a Toyota something with a cracked windscreen. Not a chip but a massive crack.

Nothing wrong with driving with a crack if it’s not in the way. ;)

Seriously, in winter about half the vehicles on the road have cracked windscreens and it’s generally not an issue, unless some plonked insists on driving around with a crack right on their eye line..

But no, MOTs shouldn’t be scrapped, although it is simpler not having to deal organize a checkup every year.

Most of the other cars seem to be missing at least one light, either a DRL or headlight. That’s if they use them at all.

You should see some of the cars in the States where they don’t have their version of MOT.

I'll never forget being overtaken by some guy where the door was so rusted out you could see him operating the pedals and pretty sure his brakes were only marginally operational.

Very true, I saw some interesting examples when I was in Colorado recently:

So many trashed cars like that driving around. They just don't care.

It'll never get scrapped, they'll keep making it tougher for cars to pass to try and get more older less fuel efficient cars off the road.

Where have you been it was in 1937.

Wish the pedants would get over this, yes we know it is not called road tax anymore but the generic term for the various annual vehicle taxes is used all over the world.

The direct link between VED and road spending will return in 2020 as announced by the govt in 2015

Yep, It's road tax in all but name. You don't pay it if the car is off the road.
