The internet is getting irritating

Right, legit question time, and a massive ****** off rant.

My wife just unfriended me on Facebook so we could see what we'd see of each others' profiles as strangers. We don't use Facebook much, mainly to see what others are up to in the family (allover the world) and I use it for study groups and stuff. I rarely post anything outside of that but even if I do, I thought everything was locked down to friends only. Quick look and although loads of it is hidden, there is still far too much on there, for both of us (we're generally private people).

I'll be making a fake account for the group's and stuff and deleting my Facebook account because quite frankly I'm ******* sick and tired of having to check the ******* thing every 5 mins to make sure they haven't changed a word in term 55b on page 732 of addendum 14a of the original terms and conditions to reveal all my stuff. I asked for my stuff to be private, I ******* want it private, end of discussion, not jump through hoops every time they change their mind.

Anyway, is there an alternative to Facebook where I can upload pics and stuff for family to see, using a link I send them? Cos I can't even begin to tell you how fed up I am with this whole scenario, honestly zuckerface can take all his servers and shove them up his arse for all I care.
good luck deleting your account, it's easier packing in a sky subscription these days. You could set up a dropbox account for photos and things I suppose?

Wasn't there a social media site set up by anonymous or something that was supposedly completely private by design?

My family members have access to a shared Dropbox folder. Then we all shove our birthday / holiday / booze-up photos in there :-) Anything older than a year is deleted to free up space on the assumption that everyone have CTRL-V'd it locally.

Even with a fake account FB still tracks you on your computer regardless if wether you are logged in to FB or not...

The only way to really escape is nuke your account...any account wether it be fake or not.

Doesn't FB track you even if you're not a member by way of embedded buttons/images on webpages? I think someone brought it up a while ago about the FB integrated stuff on this forum doing some tracking and the question was raised about removing social media stuff.

I miss late 90's/early 2000's internet. It was slow but much more sane. The amount of clickbait, fake news articles and general rubbish just does my head in now. I agree about news sites being more ads than content which results in your computer slowing to a crawl unless you're adblocking.

Also, internet access should have required passing an exam, much like Amateur Radio. :p

uBlock Origin

PiHole.

Pi-Hole, Simples

100% this.

Plus script blocking, pop up blocking and running through a good VPN. I want as few footprints as possible and no ads.

Using the internet at other peoples houses is weird when they dont have these things in place... Familiar sites are LITTERED in adverts and other junk. :/
And friends find using the internet at mine weird, as its too clean and the sites dont look how they expect.

Im sure facebook have a profile of somesort of everyone in the connected world, even if you have never signed up for an account i bet they have a profile of sorts attached to your mobile number. Other users who have you listed in there contact list will have been shared with facebook via there app, times that by how many times it has been uploaded and by who and by proxy they have a good idea of who you are, where you are in the world and who your friends are.
And all you have done is given out your mobile number to a few friends!

Probably but then I suppose Google is the same if not worse (search history ).

I have my suspicions about telemetry tracking in windows 10. Wouldn't be hard for Microsoft to give each os install a unique identifier meaning even behind a vpn they can tell its still the same user. Maybe I'm just paranoid :o

Nope you are probably right though evidence is needed first. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if this is what they where doing/planning.

Anyone else find this shady as ****? Yahoo and other linked sites won't allow you to view now them unless you allow them to collect your data. No option to opt out. If you click on the 'Manage Options' button you get this.

Reason enough to move on if you ask me.

Plenty of people mentioning pihole/adblockers you can also use host file adblocking which is great.

Excellent list, thanks! Because of this thread I ditched Adguard (which is excellent, but the system-wide app is comparatively heavy on resources) and went back to uBlock Origin configured in advanced > hard mode (* * 3p block, * * 3p-script block, * * 3p-frame block). Web browsing is instant again (even on my 6 year old MBP) and websites literally just appear when I click links. Awesome. :D
