Five dead as minibus and 4x4 crash on A96 in Moray

The X trail is about as 4x4 as a Kuga and a head on with a 3/4/5 tonne minibus transit is never going to end well whatever you're driving.

Awful for the families and awful for the emergency services

Pretty alarming a big 4X4 can't protect you in a crash. The x-trail is in a mess.

It obviously passed all the required crash tests for it to reach the market, so it's not 'alarming'. People have unrealistic expectations of safety when you consider it's two several ton objects hitting each other at speed.

"The frontal tests are performed at 64 km/h (40 mph) into an offset deformable barrier. "

It's like cars need a big sticker inside that says crash tested at 40mph , may not be safe if you drive faster.

I mean, I'm continually told fatty food might kill me or smoking will give me cancer.

Are you for real?
Well, this might be a simulation, who can really say for sure.

I've considered an x-trail as a family car, but they don't look very safe. You may disagree and say the same about any car in that situation, but we have no data for that.

They were probably doing what 50-60mph at the time of the crash. Do you think any 4x4 would stand a chance?

This reads like some weird schizophrenic argument with yourself.

One minute it's like you're surprised that the people in the 4x4 weren't able to walk away and then the next you're not.

I'll give you one piece of advice though - no matter what car you buy, don't drive it with the expectation that it'll keep you safe in a head on crash, especially if you're unfortunate enough to hit a bigger vehicle.

you need to look at passangers compartment not how much the car has folded. Theyre designed to crumple to absorb force/energy going through.

I'm sure most of the deaths will be from the van due to no seat belts etc.

Dissipate, not absorb (not trynna be a smartass here btw, they are two very different things).

It annoys me when people say that their 1990 Volvo estate is so safe because it's built like a tank. No matter how tough any vehicle is, if it's in an impact it will release a tremendous amount of energy and the more a vehicle can dissipate it, the less your body/ies have to deal with. So yes, an old Volvo might take a punishing but all that means is that your body is getting wrecked.

A Transit minibus has a gvw (ie max load weight) of ~ 4.8tons, at speed especially your quite right, any 4x4 is going to come off far worse no matter if it’s an X-Trail or Range Rover.

Assuming the fatalities were in the minibus I’d wager the passengers at least were most likely not wearing seat belts - I see this often, the driver always is yet rarely the passengers - you can be pretty certain the X-Trail occupants were all strapped in and clearly from the photos the vehicle had better passenger protection such as the clearly visible deployed airbags.

R.I.P.

Looks like the driver of the car is in hospital but alive. Deaths from the car were of older age (sorry but I'm 21, 63, 69 and 70 is old to me...)

How **** would you feel knowing that you lived as the driver but your passengers didn't. Wagers on the van drifting over and hitting the car head on with the driver left essentially powerless.

Depends if he had any fault in the accident. If he contributed then for sure, he will feel ****, but if the van caused it then you wouldn't feel bad, just lucky to be alive.

oh trust me doesn't matter whose fault it is the driver of the 4x4 will be an absolute wreck if she survives.

I agree that's how the driver should feel and would be prosecuted for, but if she's not I bet she still won't sleep easy, why did she survive but no others? I feel that's how I'd feel.
