Fans on new card

Hey guys, so I just bought a new GTX 1080, the GEFORCE GTX 1080 Ichill AIR BOSS x4 one. I've just installed it, my first time installing a new GPU, so was a bit afraid of doing it wrong. Well it's on, it's running, the little fan on the front looked like it was trying to spin though, but wasn't. It's started spinning now, randomly, the third fan underneath has yet to begin spinning though. I turned up the fans to 100% on MSI Afterburner to see if it would come on, but it hasn't. Maybe it will once the card hits a certain temp? I'm not sure exactly how it works.

The biggest problem though is I tried it first with Battlefield 1, instantly, as soon as it began to load, there is a strange noise coming from my GPU. If i'm just sat here, browsing, even with the fans turned up, there's no noise, as soon as I load up BF1(haven't tried another game yet), it starts squeaking almost.

Any ideas?

Could be coil whine. Is it coming from the fans though? Normally fans don't make a squeaking sound, or if they do you'd notice it more readily.

I'm not sure. I just noticed it as soon as I loaded the game. Tab out, it disappears instantly, tab back in,.and it starts immediately. What's coil whine?

Eh, I think I found the issue, or a issue atleast. Took the card out, tried to spin the fans with my finger, first 2 are fine, the third however is catching and scraping on the metal.. what am I supposed to do about that? I received the card today from OCUK.

It's basically an electrical current that you can hear passing through a component like a transformer or inductor, causing it to vibrate at a variable frequency.

Ah, interesting... well, you could RMA it for that if you wanted. It might be fixable though, just by removing the cooler. Depends if you want to go that effort.

I doubt I'd be able to tbh. I'm a noob, built my first pc a couple months ago, this GPU and a psu were the final pieces. Only got the GPU out the box 45 minutes ago.

Sounds like RMA time then... unless you know someone nearby who can help you out.

sounds like coil whine from your description. maybe leave BF1 on while its making the noise, some people suggest doing that and just leaving it to make the noise sort of fixes it eventually.

for me though coil whine is a huge defect and i would return if i could. plus the bad fan is a defo return issue.

If it is just in the menus this isn't a problem with your graphics card this is an issue with the game.

Some games have faulty menus that run your card at crazy framerates like 2000fps. Origin is known for this.

I would definitely try some games out and play and see if it still makes noice. If it bad return it.

Yeah, maybe it was that, the card had literally been in with my PC turned on for about 10 or 15 minutes or so. I can plug my 970 back in, just curious what will happen, since I got the card from the sale that's currently going on, and paid £18 postage to have it delivered today, I'm assuming they'll want to receive the card back before sending a new one? I haven't returned anything to OC before, so not sure how quick the entire thing is.
That's my deluxe gaming weekend over though :(

It was in-game too, only reason I didn't try anything else was because I didn't want to do any damage to the card incase something is wrong with it, then I found the fan issue too when I took it out.

Sounds like you definitely need to return it. If you ask a question in customer service section they will help you.

They should be pretty good and refund your postage and send you new card.

You can't keep it if all fans are not spinning.

Just a few things, I have a top of the line GTX 1080, not all the fans spin at the same time and none of the fans spin until around 50c in windows.
Coil whine will be more notable under very heavy loads... but the fans should spin free as already mentioned.
To see if all the fans spin properly just go into the bios.

Yeah, I did think that perhaps the 3rd fan wouldn't start until it reached much higher temperatures, there was still whatever that noise was though, and then I found the 3rd fan to be catching and getting jammed anyway. I can't spin it round myself as it gets caught on something.
If the sound is coil whine, it was doing it whenever i'd tab in, without it being hot, literally just going into the game would start it.

I read that certain PSU's can cause it, or using Vsync/capping FPS to refresh rate can help or fix it. I'd probably be okay with it then if my 3rd fan wasn't getting caught, how sad :(

I wouldn't stress about the RMA tbh, these guys don't mess about in general :)
Give 'em a ring tomorrow... Yeah I feel your pain, we just had to wait 3 weeks for an RMA but you'll be fine ;)
