Connecting Hp Gen 8 to Hisense TV

I am try to connect my Hp Gen 8 server to my TV.

I am using on board video and my Gen 8 only has VGA output and the TV only has HDMI, so I bought a VGA to HDMI adaptor thinking it would work. I have tried different HDMI cables but still doesn't work. Any ideas?
 
VGA is an analogue format and HDMI is digital so you'd need an active (powered) box to convert it. Plus it has to be intended to convert in the correct direction.

What is your adapter like? The small dongle-like things that sitnin the HDMI port are usually HDMI to VGA, not VGA to HDMI.
