tonight whilst playing crash bandicoot on my desktop I got. Message pop up from my hue+

**GPU HAS EXCEEDED 85 DEGREES**

I know the weather is hot outside that’s what I’m putting it down to right? It’s not popped up before and I know crash isn’t that demanding after 30 mins of playing.

Do you think I should chuck in a few more fans? Don’t think the weather is going to be much warm for long now it back to rain and thunder storms! Just what we’re used to up here.
I’ve got a Thermaltake v21 case which has a big 240mm case fan plus one at the back I think and the the gpu fan as well

Best advise I can offer is to download HWiNFO make sure all your fans are working properly and dust free.

Edit: I take it you don't have water cooling?

Ok I’ll give this a go tonight

No just standard fans, liquid cooling for the cpu

I would suggest turning on vsync, a game like that is probably getting loads more frames than you need. It's maxing out the card needlessly.

Yeah well I thought that it’s not using a lot or stressing the gpu as the game must have the FPS lock on as it sits at 30 and plays fine. Would I turn off FPS lock and v-sync on?

its deffo not hot tonight up here unless you've got your heating on.

No Defs not hot up here but our house is always hot inside as it is let alone after all this heat. My pc Is up stairs as well where it’s warmest. Maybe not such a good idea after all!
I can try with a side panel and fan it it happens again but I play a lot more needy games fine

Seems quite hot, you need to get AIDA64 or Realbench on the go (check temps with HWiNFO) and do some testing as suggested above with a fan etc. How old is the card-might be worth trying some new thermal paste on it if it doesn't void the warranty. A more aggressive fan curve and more cooling may help as well. @doyll might be able to help you with picking the correct upgrade for that case fan wise!.

I'm not sure about the FPS lock actually. MSI Afterburner or similar can tell you what the GPU load is like and what the clock/fan speeds are during, etc. Graphs are useful :)

My cards only a year old and just light use, I’ll check the usage, only seemed to be on crash and also it was quiet warm at the time, have another shot tonight

Aye there open inoo fine draft:p

I know our weather has been warmer than usual but it's not even close to being hot like many places on earth, and while the humidity in the air makes us wet because our sweat doesn't evaporate it does help cooler cool.

That said, when was the last time you cleaned your case filters, fan blades, cooler fins, etc.?

If they are dirty airflow is lowered and things don't cool as well. What are your temps now versus what they were like 2 months ago?

Most peeps don't really pay attention to case airflow and getting it setup properly, then when weather gets even slightly warm their systems start running hot. You might find the guide in below link of interest. It is the basics of airflow and how to optimize case airflow.

I haven’t really done it before maybe that’s a job for today.
As I said before my pc is rarely used, I fire it up maybe once a month if that I’m always on my laptop now, this is the first time I have had any slight issue so I think I’ll maybe open it up and give it a clean, probably be surprised. My pc was shop built so I assume the airflow has been set up correctly!
Any suggestions tips for the clean out? I’ll check and report back with the fan situation.

Don't assume system has good airflow just because it was shop built. Most shops simply install components into case and give it to buyer.

Clean the intake vents and filters first, then the fan blades and remove fan from cooler and hoover out the fins from intake side. We always want to suckm dust/lint out the opposite direction as airflow that caused it. Hoover brush attachment works pretty good at sucking things out. A fairly long soft bristle brush and compressed air can be helpful. Again, blow air in the opposite direction to airflow that created the dust.

Been a bit more busier than I thought today so I’m going to attack it tomorrow still a few more “jobs” to do around the house first means I can install my 4th 1TB HD as well.
thanks @doyll ill have a closer look tomorrow and post pics if I’m not sure with the fans but the cleaning stuff, good advice!, I’ll get a tin of air this time then maybe think about ordering that blower........ so I guess the Mrs’s Hairdryer is out of the picture:D:D

Yeah, I doubt her hairdryer has enough blow to do much good. hoover out first with rubber tip, the brush loose and hoover again should do it .. unless heavy smoker or lots of pet hair. Pet hair might need a wire pick to pull out of fins, but heavy smoke means oily gunk that need washing with good warm soapy water .. not something we want to be doing without planning to remove wash dry very well rather quickly (wife's hair drying works well) and re-installing. I've had to do this to complete systems; motherboard, RAM, GPU, everything but the CPU. Not easy and not fun.
