Which Samsung (S8+. S9, Note8)

I've been speaking to EE about switching from Sim only to a contract again and have been offered 3 options in the higher end range (want to stick with Samsung)

All contracts are 20gb/Unlim/Unlim, can't move from EE for signal reasons and can't make my mind up between the S8+ (£33/month) Note8 (£32/month) and S9 (£37/month)

The part of me that wants the larger phone is telling me to forget the 8+ and go for the note, but another part of me is telling me I have girly sized hands and the S9 is the right one to go for.

Not sure if half of me is thinking the gimmicky stylus cold be fun, but would barely get used! (If you use a none touchwiz launcher does it still open the note app when the Stylus is removed etc..)

Any thoughts on this, especially interested if anyone here has had 2 or more of these!

I went from note 4 to s8+ I hate the pointless curved screen . Buy a 8+, smash it then get a note 8..if that has a curved screen smash that as well .

That's reminds me I gotta sell this phone and get a note 8.. Who thought this design was a good idea... I hate the was web site distort at the edge the way the very most corners get things on obviously designed for a 90 degree angle not a curve ..
 
I know what you mean, it does worry me that curved screen is everywhere in the Samsung range, I'm just putting myself in the mindset of once I am using it day to day I'd see why they have it on all their high end devices!
 
How much can you get an S8+ for? The S9+ isn't worth the extra over an S8+ at all. It's the reason why sales of the S9 generally haven't met the expectations set vs sales of the S8 series.

You'd also save some money by going S8+

tbh, i dont mind the curve at all. i think the whole distortion thing is isnt nearly as bad as people make out. What bothers me in the lengths samsung are going to cut corners. I'm talking about the glass itself - the s8/s8+ are so incredibly fragile (and s9/note8 i guess, unless samsung have addressed it). Mine smashed after being dropped 2ft on to laminate flooring. not stone or concrete, laminate with squidgy underlay underneath. The camera lens also smashed which fair enough can be replaced but they are quite literally thinner than a piece of paper, way thinner than the lense on my old note 4. IMO, i'd much rather samsung make the stuff bit thicker and more hardy. The bloody devices are getting expensive enough. :rolleyes:
 
The glass on mine is still untouched, I do't use a case or screen protector, just a dbrand rear skin. Mine droppped onto tarmac from head height and I chipped the alu bezel in a few places, but screen is untouched. Even the most robust phone will crack if you get unlucky with angle physics, yet the most fragile could be just fine.

Yep, not sure it'll affect S8 pricing much and for a Note9 on contract you'll be looking at £50+ I'd imagine?

S8+ would be £37.99 a month, basically the same as the S9 so its either size or a better camera over what was already a pretty good one (I'm no photographer to your standards so I don't think I'd notice/utilise the difference) then the Note8 comes out £6 a month cheaper and really is some S9 tech on an S8+ with a slightly bigger body and a stylus, right?

I don't know if the S-Pen would be of use or not, but at the same time I can't imagine it not being a fun accessory for at least an hour!

I thought the Note8 & S9 had the same camera, dual lens w/ physical zoom?

The 9+ is £43 a month although there is an offer on uswitch for £38 with 20GB data and the EE guys seem happy to try & price match..

I had an S8 for a year and although had a cheap case on had no screen protector. After a year the display glass was pretty much unmarked. Only regret I had with the S8 was that I hadn't bought the S8 Plus instead. S9 came out so traded the S8 for S9 Plus. S9 Plus display glass had a couple of scratches on it after 2 weeks and looked to me like it was soon going to scratch badly. I applied one of those stupidly expensive Dome Glass screen protectors. Well I say 'one', in actual fact two. The first one cracked badly after just over two months. Wasn't dropped so why it should crack I had no idea.

To the OP then I'd say handle all three phones and buy the one you prefer. The curved glass you soon get used to though accept some don't like it. If you have smaller hands then the Plus size phones aren't the easiest to handle one handed. All of them bare are very slippery and I'd strongly recommend not dropping any of them :eek: A case or a skin should give some extra grip. If the S8 is quite a bit cheaper than S9 then the S8 may be worth considering as not a big upgrade from 8 to 9. I only upgraded because I fancied the bigger phone but now I've had the bigger S9 Plus for a few months then given the choice again I might (probably - well possibly) go for the smaller none Plus sized S8 or 9 :rolleyes: All are too expensive really :D
 
Yeah, I've used a friend's S8+ and it does feel big, but then again, as my current one is smaller its going to, I;m sure a larger one would feel normal after a few days!

I think I need to sort this out today, my S6 battery is now being awful, finally charges on fast charge but on standard I get about 7% in it in 20 minutes, not what it was a month or 2 back.

I think the S9 or Note would be fine, but the Note8 at £32 for 20gb data doesn't seem bad to me, especially with no upfront fee and me coming from sim only.
 
Caved & ended up with the S9+, 30gb for £38 a month, seems a decent enough deal and my S6's battery is currently being a nightmare, I think it heard me talking about the S9!

Liked the idea of the note, but at the end of the day I think the S-Pen would end up as a gimmick I would barely ever use!

May as well go future proof then hopefully sim free in 2 years again, only getting a change cause my battery went to hell!

Hi I'm really sorry to thread hijack but I'm in a very similar position and I'd like to know if the prices you've mentioned above came from EE themselves (either in store or the upgrade line 150), or via a reseller like carphone warehouse. The EE website, for example, shows the note 8 at £58/month for 30gb/unl/unl which is a country mile away from what you've been offered. Infact all three of the handsets you mention all cost considerably more on their website.

Yep, from EE upgrades (Been on SIM only with them for the last 3 years after 2 years on contract)

No probs at all on the hijack! If it can help others too then great!

This was from calling EE on 150, the best they could offer me was £43 a month for the S9+ with a £150 upfront cost, I mentioned the offer on uswitch of £38/month with £90 upfront and I could just take that, they said they'll match it & drop the upfront fee, the girl I spoke to was incredibly helpful and if you trust me I can send you her email to request a callback (Not sure if they are on commission there, but if they are, she deserves it, shes one of the most helpful people I've dealt with over all the time I've been changing contracts etc..!)

Obviously it does also depend on your standing with them, although I'm still confused as to what is worth the most to these companies, their existing customers or new ones!

I've just moved from an S7 Edge to a S9+. It's a new contract phone so had to do the whole PAC in and out faff. Got it for £0 upfront, £43 a month, UL minutes/texts and 30gb data. It's better than the S7 edge but I am glad I have not had to shell out a load upfront for it. My previous contract was £38 a month for 5gb data so I think this new deal is pretty good.
