Ok so recently been tempted by a product like this, on researching I've went down a few wormholes & ultimately now feel that it's not opportune just quite yet. A killer product combining excellent video quality and reasonable cloud storage costs seems elusive.

The Nest IQ Outdoor is probably the best of current options for my needs, but jeez its expensive @ £329 , AND the cloud costs are a bit expensive, & get this, if you want to record at highest quality to the cloud with your cloud sub(and why wouldnt you) it will upload 400gb a month, lol.

The Ring floodlight job looks ok but not quite as good as the Nest, though cheaper cloud.

I think I want a camera that performs as well as the Nest for £150 ish and reasonable cloud storage costs,£5 a month?

OR does a decent standalone outdoor IP camera exist that can write to your own cloud storage, AND has decent firmware/interface?

Anyone any thoughts?

I looked into this but in the end decided that for the cost 1080p is too low quality after seeing footage on a phone screen and from youtube reviews, think 4k is minimum to invest in now

Only advantages i can see smart cams have is streaming works out of the box vs say trying to get hikivison to stream and the AI / smart processing and identification, but to get this you have low resolution and high subscription costs to deal with

nest does have a 4k sensor so maybe it will get upgraded in future?

I think the Nest DOES use the 4k sensor, inasmuch as when you use the zoom it apparently uses its 4k-ness to enable zooming in (aka selecting a portion of the image) without as much loss as a pure digital zoom would, if that makes sense. This guy explains it better than me

Afaik think it does just help the 12x zoom and maybe 4k still shots - will watch the vid later, still would like 24/7 4k recording though

Edit: Just watched the vid, helps zoom only, 1080p max leaves the cam so not even still shots are 4k :(

I just noticed they have added a 5 day nest aware package, £4 a month https://nest.com/uk/cameras/nest-aware/

But still, 400gb upload per month

& I think you may be correct, the image quality isn't stellar, & this latest Nest iteration is one of the best.

Could use an option for increasing quality when something is detected - so could always record say 1 min in highest quality and if no detection then save to cloud in low res but if any detection save in highest res etc until detection over or for 5 mins after etc - would keep data down - smart or auto data setting etc

Still cant decide between 4k but dumb ip cams, or 1080p but smart cams

ps https://www.light.house/ maybe the smartest cam, shame you cant get it as software to analyse any cam footage so you could use higher res cams, maybe software like this to run on a nas would be good

I have used Hikvision 4mp cameras & they are decent, but like you say they aren't smart & at that res onsite storage might be best, with all the hassle that entails.

Lighthouse looks very cool, its all getting too much lol.

I have 4 logicircle cameras that are pretty good for what I need them for - £125 each and 24 hrs of cloud storage for free. Might be worth a look given your requirements

I also have a Logitech circle, I use the free 24hrs of storage. The app is good and will ping you if movement is detected.

I was considering the Nest Outdoor IQ, at £330 it's by far the most expensive but i could live with that, but it's the subs per camera. £4 for the forst and then £3 for any subsequent ones.

I'm not sure why they couldn't just do a package for around £10/month like the other offerings.

I've bought the Arlo Pro 2, got it yesterday but it's still sat in its box. Gonna have a play maybe tonight to see what i think and also consider the Ring Floodlight options if i don't like it.

I had an attempted break in on Sunday night. Went into town and came back with the Nest outdoor and indoor camera. Very impressed with them so far! Got plans to add more devices too.

Yeah, i've settled on the Nest IQ range. Picked up 2 of the indoor ones brand new on ebay for £210 each and got very lucky with ordering an outdoor one as they sent me 2 instead of 1!

I've worked out that 4 cameras with the doorbell will come in at £15 a month in subs which is a bit ridiculous but it's not a lot when you think about it. Plus they're bringing out a smart Yale lock in early 2019 so that will be superb. That's probably what swung it for me.

yea thats what swung it for me too really. Im getting that installed as soon as its released.

Sounds like you're in the same mindset then. Having it all in the same ecosystem *should* make it all work nicely.

Not sure if you have a wired doorbell or not, but theres a company called 50Five which offers the Nest Hello, with transformer/chime etc and installation for £328. I thought it was a decent offer rather than messing around buying transformers and wiring it up yourself. Obviously if you already have a wired doorbell it's much easier :p

Check out Netgear Arlo. I bought two - one for the hallway, and one for the garden. Battery lasts around 3 weeks.

Is this the pack you got? Do you know what model of chime that is?

Did you install it yourself or have them do it?

It looks like it comes with the Europa EBT16-8 transformer, which can be had for £15.

Anyone know what the box is that it seems to be mounted in, in the image below on the right?
I need to be able to wall mount it next to the chime.

I want to get this setup for my mum, waiting for black friday to see if they do a deal as I missed the £20% off deal at Argos last month that made it £186 for the Nest Hello.

Hoping to be able to install it myself to save some cash. I contacted an official nest fitter through their website and they were charging £176 to supply a chime, transformer and fit it, which nearly doubles the price :(

Already got bell wire and mains power cable in place, so the hard bit is done, just need the bits and wiring instructions.

Yeah that’s the kit I got. £99 which included the actual installation.

I probably could’ve installed myself but was much easier to let them!
