£4-6k sporty ish car?

How about a Megane R26?

I picked up my Liquid Yellow one last year for £5.5k with 65k on the clocks. Full service history and running 296bhp/307ft-lbs. Having a LSD really helps with the extra power

How are they for reliability. I swore to.never but a French car after seeing many pug 206's die with bad paint, rattles, engine issues etc

The one I had, identical to the above but 08, was a pain in the ass. To be fair it was mainly small things, but lots of them. As already said though, great cars to drive.

So far it's been good. The only issues I've had is a failing drivers window module (common fault that was present before I bought it but hasn't been bad enough for me to get round to replacing as it'll be fine for months) and the clutch on the air con compressor has failed. I've just bought a replacement clutch for it for £60 and will be replacing it myself. Failing front swivel bearings are a common problem but mine have been checked and are fine and ive added some grease bolts to them to keep them good.
The engine is running at the very top of what's achievable on a stock turbo and the torque has been limited due to still being on standard internals. Power mods I'm running are a Ktec 3" turbo back exhaust system and induction kit, Forge intercooler, and 630cc injectors. These mods have been on the car for 4+ years and when I had the map checked and adjusted by Chris at EFI Parts he mentioned that it was performing very well (he actually said it's the best performing stock turbo'd Mk2 Megane he has had on his dyno which was nice to hear)
Handling out the box is very good. The Brembo 4 pot brakes are good, but lack a bit of feel on stock pads. The Recaro seats are supportive, but are a bit high. This can be resolved with a set of modified subframes (£180). The gear shift is pretty poor but a short shift linkage is available to address this (£80)
Overall it's a very good package and arguably the best hot hatch of its era.

Thanks and while they may be a good hatch ad you say it's an experience of fixing things fairly frequently which is with it never want a French car:(

I'll stick to looking at h9nda I think

Compared to my old EP3 the R26 is a better package IMO. Oh and replacement synchros on a Type R gearbox aren't cheap and will most likely be required.

Yes, they are poorly put together with cheap parts. But the sporty ones do perform quite well if you just want something low cost to throw around.

Yeah I appreciate that. I did look at them a few years ago but decided against. Always liked them but not enough to put the money down.
