The Terror is a novel by Dan Simmons based upon a failed attempt at finding the Northwest Passage.

I'm quite tempted by this story and wondered whether any of you guys have already read the novel?

This book has now been made into a TV series. Season 1 recently ended and I've nearly finished watching it, so here follows a brief overview of the premise.

The year is 1867. Britain has sent two ships on a secret mission to discover Antarctica, which French geologists have identified as a vital source of grapes. Unknown to the leaders of the expedition, the crew contains two homosexuals.

When their ships become stuck in pack ice, the captains are forced to make difficult decisions about the future of the mission and the likelihood of safely returning home.

Tension mounts as local natives issue vague and largely unhelpful warnings about a nebulous threat, while exploratory attempts are hampered by bad weather and seemingly random attacks on the crew that may or may not be related to the fact that a giant animal of unknown origin has been stalking the entire cast since episode 1.

Later, one of the captains dresses up as a woman, and someone poisons a monkey.

Good times!

:)

haven't read the novel, but the TV series was fantastic. Top class indeed. It’s production and atmosphere is so good, I caught pneumonia just watching it.

I was so taken with it, that being a model ship builder, it convinced me to build the HMS Terror model.

i was disappointed by the tv series as they changed a lot from the book concerning the ending.
I can recommend the book but it is very long and very detailed - some people might find it boring.
