So I've been decorating my living room and wanted to change the old ceiling rose pendant's which were covered in paint etc for new ones. I've done this in a number of other rooms in the house with no issues. Just take the old one off and wire up the new one the same as the old one. Easy. Unfortunately the living room has a two way light switch which makes things more complicated and although I took photographs prior to removing the old light fitting with the intention of using these to re wire the new fitting, I realised after I took it off that the photographs weren't very good and that as I hadn't marked the wires, it wasn't really possible to tell which wires were where before I took it off as there 4 lives and 3 neutrals which are obviously the same colour. I wired it the new fitting up the way i thought the old one was wired but this did not work and tripped the breaker. So I have removed everything and put insulating tape around the ends of the wires until I can get it sorted out. I think this has now gone beyond my limited knowledge of such things so I am probably going to call in an electrician. Was just wondering what folk reckon I would have to pay to get someone to come and wire it up?
Also for my own knowledge can anyone explain how exactly the two way switch set up works? There are four flexes coming out of the ceiling. 3 have a live, neutral and earth, but one only has a live and earth. Most of the explanations online I have looked at for this set up mention only 3 flexes? For reference the living room has two lights. There is a two gang switch on one side of the room which controls each light individually and then a one gang on the other side which only controls one of the lights (the one I am trying to change).
When you are wiring a ceiling rose pennant how do you determine where each of the individual wires go? So for example if there are 4 live wires and 4 live terminations in the ceiling rose how do you decide which one goes where? Obviously the fact I am asking these questions means its probably not a good idea to attempt any further messing around with this but I am just curious. The previous ones I have done have all been single lights with their own switch and therefore much more straightforward. Also the light in the hall and the light in the porch are not working at the moment, presumably because they are on the same circuit as the light I want to change? The other light in the living room and the lights in the kitchen still work.
