Thinking about upgrading...

Good evening all,

I am so out of touch with hardware for pc's it is unreal, considering I use to build pcs for a living 18 years ago I really need to hang my head in shame. Hey that is life and other things come first :)

Been 4 1/2 years since I upgraded my machine ( below is what I purchased ) Just need some honest advice I guess, not looking to spend mega bucks but it needs to be decent and going to last for another 5 years or so. Just need advice on the guts of the pc i.e Mobo, gpu, memory and cpu etc.

So:

Worth upgrading cpu or go for a new board and later cpu?

Purchase list:
Intel Core i5-4670 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail

Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gbs Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW)

Corsair CS750M 750W Semi-Modular 80+ GOLD Certified Power Supply (CP-9020078-UK)

Gigabyte H87-HD3 Intel H87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (CML8GX3M2B1600C11)

MSI Radeon R9 290 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Thanks for looking and any advice will be much appreciated.

Kind regards
Steve

If it's gaming performance you're after then a GPU upgrade is all you'll need really. You could go up to 16gb but I don't think you'll notice much difference. Your CPU is still fine.

Assuming 1080p then either a GTX1060 (6gb variant) or the Radeon RX580 will do you fine. Probably won't last 5 years but another couple at the least in my opinion.

How much do you have to spend?

Budget I would say £600 could go more if needed.

Budget and monitor ? GPU and Gaming monitor and should be set to go . Pick up i7 K very cheap in a few.months for your board for a little pick up

Got a iiyama Eagle 27'' monitor.

Interesting point about the cpu, new one out soon I am guessing. As per above I would say in the £600 budget.

Also I do like a quiet pc so the GPU being quiet would be a bonus.

Cheers
Steve

No, not new but when the new Intel parts drop the older gen 2nd hand stuff may drop in price.

With your budget I'd be tempted by a 1070, 1070ti or 1080 (although the 1070ti and 1080 will likely be over-kill at 1080p, at least at the moment)

orbitalwalsh's suggestion is a good one assuming you're keeping your existing monitor for a while and competes directly with the 1070ti

Or you could get an 8gb RX580 and save the rest of your budget for a future upgrade? Although the Vega will undoubtedly last longer before needing to be upgraded.

Thanks for the response all, much appreciated and all taken on board. Never had a gigabyte card, normally the Asus brand route go.

Gtx 1070ti are nice cards , more powerful then Vega 56 and equal or slightly under Vega 64 .
Personally would stick with Vega for Freesync but know a lot on here have Freesync monitors with Nvidia cards due to them being £200 cheaper then G-sync monitors

Tbh when I got my monitor it wasnt due to free sync or gsync, excuse my ignorance on this lol. Like I say out of touch with PC's in general sadly. Is Free sync and the Vega card worth matching up, does it really show a difference by not having a card suited to Freesync?

Thanks for you input btw orbital, really grateful. Been reading a few thread on the Gpu etc but boy there are a few threads to read!

What ever you do, will be an upgrade :)

Might help £470 Vega 56 and ...
