Boris and the burka

I notice TM is trying to frame this as an attack on women, now. Not sure why; she must think we're all idiots.

With respect, perhaps you too think that we’re all dumb enough to accept your statement as gospel.
I played the BBC clip a few times, Mrs. May starts off by agreeing with Brandon Lewis, chairman of the Conservative Party, that Boris language caused offence, she said, “it was the wrong language, and shouldn’t have been used.”
She closed by saying, “if women choose to wear the burka, it is a matter for them to make that choice.”
Nowhere did I hear or read, that Mrs. May had said “this is an attack on women.”
FWIW I think that a great deal of Muslim women are coerced into wearing that abominable garment by husbands or fathers, but I’ll concede that there are ‘probably’ some that wear it for religious reasons.
I’m against a ban, but a campaign of educational “gentle persuasion” to wean Muslim women away from it, will be an enormous task.

It's quite literally in the Qu'ran, do you want me to point you to the specific hadiths?

Not that I agree with the other poster re: his distinction/exception for nuns (I think both cases are silly but should be allowed) but you're conflating the Quran and Hadiths here.

If it is "quite literally in the Quran" then you could quote the Quran and show it. Quoting some hadiths (which I suspect won't be sourced from the Quran) doesn't refute the point regarding the Quran.

Personally, I think some of the comments made have been very valid.

Diversity should extend to free speech and opinion.. Why cant people have an opinion and a voice today? It does not mean that person is right or wrong. It is just an opinion.. nothing more.

Those that are so easily offended seem to be looking for a reason to cause just as much trouble as those they are accusing.. life is too short .. get over it.

To the extent Boris has any point on this and there’s a sensible conversation to be had, he shouldn’t be dressing it up in such attention seeking provocative language. Wooo look at meeee.

Edit - ah this actually comes up in the news article.

Former Conservative chairwoman Baroness Warsi, the first Muslim woman to sit in a British cabinet, earlier called for disciplinary action against Mr Johnson if he did not apologise.

A debate about the burka should be had "in a serious way", she said, rather than "trying to get airtime and attention on an issue which he knows will resonate with a certain part of the Tory Party", she said.

Questions as to whether or not style of dress is dictated by the Quran are quite irrelevant here.

What Bonker Boris said was clearly designed to capitalise on and to incite racism - BJ wants to emulate his hero Enoch Powell.

All this about a throw away joke from Boris but no one mentions shariah law becoming part of the UK legal system....

Landmark ruling sees British court recognise sharia law for the first time as judge rules wife married in Islamic ceremony can make claim on husband's assets under UK law

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.da...-British-court-recognise-sharia-law-time.html
I don’t think so tbh. This man was trying to get out of giving his ex wife her fair share by saying they was married under sharia law and their marriage is not valid in the U.K. I like that the judge has said that regardless of what law you were married under, you are considered married in the UK, therefore you will be subject to British divorce law like any other citizen, and you have to pay your ex with her fair share. It’s more of a rejection of sharia law in the U.K than a recognition of it.

DM headline is good old anti Islam clickbaiting.

Fear not, "Bonker Boris" is no match at all cerebrally, oratorically nor sartorially for Enoch Powell. Rees-Mogg, now he's a different matter ;)

Not really it's more like you were married under a law that has no validity in the UK. Now we consider you as married in the UK fesoure not filing the correct paperwork under UK law. So therefore shariah law is now considered to be UK law in this instance.

Why are some people so offended by this? Denmark, Austria, France and Belgium have outright banned them.
They are abhorrent tools of control and have zero place in 2018.

Not sure anyone is particularly offended, they are just silly comments a disgraced MP shouldn't really be saying.

Because he is an ex high ranking MP making childish comments.

I'm not sure there is anything childish about them, flippant sure. But he makes flippant comments about all sorts of things as do various MPs, why does this item of clothing deserve to be special?

It's quite literally in the Qu'ran, do you want me to point you to the specific hadiths? It's the whole reason you know, that's there's a debate about interpretation / taking something literally. You're ignorance is astounding, stop making yourself look stupid.

*Edit* just seen you're other posts. Yup, I don't argue with ignoramus, blocked.

Please post where it is.

The lengths people are going to defend the indefensible from attack is daft. Criticism of outdated practice now uses the "offended" win card, like no one in this world should ever be exposed to offense even if their beliefs are backward.

Earlier in the thread there was a lot of comparison to Nuns but it's a false comparison. Nuns have made a choice to devote themselves entirely to their belief and their habit is part of that and it is not uniquely female, monks have a different but equivalent form of dress to the same end and so do priests to a lesser extent. At the exclusion of all parts of normal life. They are not wives made to hide themselves because of cultural pressures. Also Nuns do not all wear garb equivalent of the most extreme Islamic dress, in fact none cover their face and many orders, particularly those that focus on works in the community, wear uniforms not significantly more modest than "normal" dress.

We live in a very liberal country and a senior politician has defended the right of Muslims to choose what to wear unlike other European countries but in that defense he has attacked the dress as outmoded, outdated and looking ridiculous. I have no problem with that.

The Qu'ran reads like a badly translated manual and contradicts itself all over the place. I'm not surprised people interpret it a million different ways. It's as if people kept adding their own stuff to it over the centuries, but didn't check previous content.

(Yes I have read a fair chunk of it).
