Ok long and short of my issue is i have been suffering in silence for maybe 12mths now with my sky router which is :-

Manufacturer Sagemcom
Model Number F@ST2504n
Firmware Version 7.32a4N_UNI

Now the issues i have are repeatedly dropping connection regardless of weather i am wired or wireless, the connection drops for no more than 1 or 2 minutes, but that can be a pain when in the middle of a scrap in eve online.

i have tried different less populated channels currently on channel 13 all by myself and it still drops out, strange thing is some days i can retain a connection for hours. Prior to this post i have had maybe 1hr of dropping off and reconnecting, the router will probably be ok for a few hours now and then it will start again.

The wireless connection is good when connected i have 1 wall between me and the router with a distance of no more than 10ft the wired connection when i use that is via tplink av500 kit.

So my question is can anyone suggest a router mid range price £60 maybe that will be better than the cheap n nasty sagemcom i have that will work with sky fibre.

thanks

Do yourself, and your neighbours, a favour and stick to channels 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4GHz. If you want to know why Google 'why channels 1 6 and 11'.

Powerline connections can cause these sort of problems. They aren't a replacement for a real wired connection.

You need to work out whether it's a LAN or WAN issue. Set two Pings running at the same time, one to the router and the other to an external site. When the connection drops do both Pings stop, or only one of them? It could turn out that you have a line fault causing the problems not a bad router.

Have you spoken to Sky? I'd be checking if they'll do anything for you before you start buying third-party routers (especially with such a low budget).

Phone Sky and get them to check the connection, they will be able to see the dropped connections from their end. It sounds like a bad phone line, does it have any noise or crackling on it?

thank you for the replies, just got off the phone to sky.
My landline which is plugged in but never used seems to have a strange fault, when i checked that this morning for noise there was some shall we call it white noise and also the actual dial tone sounded like a police siren bee boo bee boo so that is now unplugged. The call centre girl checked the line then she decided she was going to send me a new router as mine is from 2012,(3 working days del time) she says the new one will not need to bt openreach moden anymore, if that does not sort the problem out then she said she will get an engineer out.

Can you get your line stats from your existing modem/router?

No i am not able to do this when i try to login to the route i am presented with a pinkish screen that says 400 bad request no request found, in the past i have been able to login to the router quite easily

stick to channels 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4GHz

not googled this yet but i will, i will also flick the route back to one of them when i can login to the bloody thing :)

am going to have to google how to do 2 pings at once like that :)

Yes it does but only discovered this morning

stats just managed to get logged into it also on channel 1 now

No point doing any additional testing until you have the new router.

With the line as you describe it's most likely that you do have a line fault. If plugging in the new router doesn't give you a stable connection get them to sort it.

When you're testing it's best to use a directly cabled connection. With wireless or Powerline in the mix you can never be sure where the problem is.

Are you on the 80 or 40Mb package?
am on the 40mb package.

checked my messages as this could be a cause of the irregular tone but i have none, further digging on the net suggests its an external fault probably at the green box.

but so far with the phone line unplugged my laptop has not dropped from the internet via wifi it has been very stable, so will keep an eye on it and see what happens

It could be. Normally a line fault would cause DLM to kick in and lower your speed to get stability. You appear to be still synching at the full speed anyway. It's hard to tell without a detailed stat list unfortunately.

i have no idea how to get anymore details thats all that came up when i pressed the tab for that.

1 dropped wifi signal so far which is not bad considering what i normally have, be interesting to see what router they send me hope its a decent one.

Connections still dropping, had the master socket off the wall today and stripped right back the main incoming line, it deffo has a fault on it with the irregular dial tone and loads of white noise.

Now until the sky router comes i will have to live with it for a few days, once route is here i will report the line to them and get an engineer out, so i have a question regarding routers i am going to assume the sky one i get will be pretty low quality and am looking to replace, i know how to extract username and password etc so no issues there. the router i am drawn to because of the reviews it has from sky users is the tp-link archer vr900

question is will i be able to use the 5 ghz channel with sky by just selecting that or is it more complex to set up 5 ghz?

thanks

You shouldn’t be messing with BT’s side of the master socket. Especially not a good idea if you’re expecting BT to be out checking in the immediate future.

Most ISP routers are good enough. No point changing anything until the line is fixed. They almost certainly won’t provide any support unless you’re using their supplied equipment.

Using 5GHz on Sky’s router won’t be any different to any other you might buy.

i messed as in made sure no wire's were loose and all connection were good, sky also ask you to remove the face plate for their testing procedure.

thanks for the reply

Well got the new route/hub from sky today and its plugged in and working screen shot of statistics look at the noise levels are the supposed to be that high?

also thanks to everyone who has bothered to look in and reply all help and info appreciated
