Chicago police under fire after 'bait truck' used to lure thieves

They also fill the truck with expensive shoes because if you steal over $500 worth in Illinois it becomes a felony theft, with sentences 2-5 years rather than up to 1 year for under this. I wouldn't be surprised if 1, maybe 2 boxes of shoes was deliberately priced above this amount.

The whole thing stinks whatever way you look at it.

They're not making anyone commit a crime.

But there are plenty of real thefts they could be solving, just because someone steals from this bait truck doesn’t mean they have done it before or do it again, it’s wasting police time and making people criminals.

Probably helps with their stats. Easy work, they should do some real work.

Surely laying temptation in your path?

Still isn't forcing anyone to do anything.

"Yeah mate, sorry I nicked your car burnt was tempting me" isnt an excuse ffs.

Yeah, sorry I raped that lapdancer but she was tempting me!

Just because I rape you and beat you to death doesn't mean I'm going to do it again or have done it before.
Makes it ok eh?

They put themselves in that position. They choose to steal. Nicking trainers ain't feeding your starving kids.

It can be, since the trainers can be traded or sold. What the bait is has little or no relevance to the ethical questions about using bait to tempt people to steal.

But the short skirt and knee high boots he was wearing, ON THE STREET IN PLAIN SIGHT, made rape too tempting, amirite?

I'm all for bait traps of all kinds, in all areas and aimed at all walks of life. Perhaps this is the only way people today will stop and think "wait, should I be doing this?" because parenting and society isn't cutting it today.

They don't even have to break into the bait car, a lot of the time its left with keys inside and the doors unlocked. There was a series showing this in action, sometimes they stage a mock argument with people getting out of the car and walking off leaving it wide open.

True, but nobody forces them to take the criminal action. They just make the opportunity all the more available to people who are more predisposed to commit a crime.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

My respect for law enforcement in that part of the world is growing with each new revelation I hear about them.

And if the temptation wasn't there in the first place by putting cars into neighbourhoods they know they're liable to have thieves scoping out it wouldn't happen. It seems more of a waste of time than anything, when in Chicago of all places (known to many as Chiraq) they're doing bait cars instead of focusing on more hardcore crime which is rampant in that place.

I thought entrapment was illegal in the U.S?

Only if you're rich and white :p

It does remind me a bit of the "Catch A Predator" programme, which is where people hunt down child groomers. It happens in the UK as well, although it's a grey area atm whether normal people should be doing this or leave it to the police.

That's right folks. If your car is stolen it's YOUR fault for having something someone was tempted to steal! How could you? You monsters. Didnt you think.of that poor thief with no self control or higher reasoning?

You obviously haven't seen some of these bait car scenes, they literally drive into areas known for high crime and get out of the car in full view of people and leave the engine running in some instances. If anything all they're doing is picking up repeat offenders for the same thing over and over. Some of them even know full well its a bait car ffs. Just seems to be a waste of time on the whole considering the scale of crime in Chicago.

So...Again, higher reasoning.

These people are so thick they'll steal a car that they know is being used to set them up and you're defending them? They're absolute wastes of oxygen.

How am I defending them? I'm saying it's a waste of time considering what else goes on in Chicago. The way the cops go about doing it does seem a bit iffy supplying the car and the keys,. I'd be surprised if they get much more than repeat offenders mainly.

It's saddening that if this bait car was dumped in a slum populated with mostly white people and you got a little slim shady stealing it, this thread probably wouldn't even exist.

Your hatred is too strong bruh. There is more to these people's desperation than what you think it may be. No ones defending criminals, a real persons item has not been stolen.

@dowie is clearly not performing today so I'll take this one for the team. This is an interesting one, these cops are trying to reduce crime in a certain area by using bait and they get told off because it's in a poorer area with more black people and they're inciting racism or some such nonsense.

Well it certainly will render any statistics generated, void. Because if you go round actively targeting black hoods then your stats are going to be ****ed aren't they?

Then the same people come along and be like "80% of the crime was done by black people lock em up now". lol.

What a palaver lol, and nice how they do it with a car. They might as well just perform the charade with a wad of cash.

"OK the bait-wad is ready, the officer has made it rain in the middle of a black ghetto and is now running away from the scene to leave a dozen black people fighting over some cash". It's basically 100% the same thing.
