The UK culturally approriating USA culture

I get similar rage when I hear

"Going to the mall" <- You're going to the bloody shopping centre, not the mall
"fraternal twins" <- Identical twins FFS, stop referring to yoru kids as something akin to a first year American university society
...speaking of American university - "Sophmore" WTF is that? It's first year, first year at university

Nothing against our American friends on here but some of the language your countrymen come out with really grinds my gears.

'mall' isnt a new thing, the local shopping centre here has been called The Mall for 12 years now lol.

I was going to post a thread like this a while back.

Yes it sickens me how weak the British leaders are for not defending our language, ways and customs.

To add to the list when I was at school we had a time table, now its schedule.

We also had school terms. But these days its called semesters.

High school, no its Senior school! Also what is this year 12, year 13 rubbish? No, its Senior 1, Senior 2, Senior 3 etc

Also this leaks over in to politics too. We're getting issues that only pertain to America imported in to Britain. We have a massive thread about Donald Trump but none about our prime minister! We're being sucked in.

...and I've gone out with plenty of American girls in my time. It's not Americas fault. It's our so called leaders who can't sell us out fast enough.

The trouble is, a lot of it we gave them and now they are returning it slightly damaged.
Slightly??!!
They've chewed up all the Haribo, overclocked the crap out of it, spilt liquid metal on all the pins, snapped off the retention bracket, lost the backplate, spilled Cheerios and Coke down the gaps, failed to get any offers on the MM for it, and are now returning it with demands for a 'good faith' tier upgrade!!!

High school, no its Senior school! Also what is this year 12, year 13 rubbish? No, its Senior 1, Senior 2, Senior 3 etc
Huh? Never heard of Senior 1, 2, 3...
It used to be 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year, 4th year, 5th year and then Sixth Form.

There's also a lot of Principals instead of Head Teachers now

The world is a far more connected place and as a result language and culture moves quickly. Apart from that half the example are complete ********.

Trick or treating has been like that for as long as I can remember. At least 20+ years.
Chemists being called pharmacies. My girlfriend is a pharmacist and that has been a job title for a long long time. A lot of pharmacists work in pharmacies surprise surprise.
Dating and dates has again been around for a very very long time.

Oh and the argument against language changing is total rubbish as well. English has always evolved and people will always have complained about this fact. Shakespeare invented a load of stuff that made its way into mainstream language and out again. Thats the way culture and language work. Perhaps we shouldn't allow Curry in this country either because that hasn't always been here. Whats the cut off point. Perhaps we should all speak olde English and only use items invented in the UK.

Quite astounded how people don't realise that this has always happened and their own parents will have said the same short sighted crap when they saw what you were doing and saying when younger.

Head Teacher runs a department, like English or Science.
Headmaster runs the whole school.
Ummm... Head teacher has always been in charge of a school. Not a department.
head teacher
hɛd ˈtiːtʃə/
noun
BRITISH
  1. the teacher in charge of a school.
synonyms: headmaster, headmistress, head, principal, director, master, mistress; More
Principles are what they're supposed to teach the kids.
lol, true. But he was talking about principal which is actually a different word. As above.

Jeez, and I thought the OP's list was petty...

First off, how should British leaders 'defend' or language/customs? By enforcing people how to speak and act? Sounds like a lovely place to live!

Schedule - is that an americanism? It's just a synonym for time table.
They're still school terms as far as I'm aware. Kids don't break up for half-semester do they? It's half-term breaks.
High School - again, is that an Americanism? it was always high school or secondary school when I was a kid. Never heard them called senior schools though so that must have been an older thing.

And yes, I'm sure you've been out with plenty of American girls ;)
Not that it has any relevance whatsoever to anything.

Even worse :/

what's a first year called then?

Actually no, dont' worry, getting riled even replying to this lol :p

Sophomore is such a stupid word.

Weather is nice today....

Freshman.

Screw all the appropriations, what irritates me is the way yanks ruin our language.

Herbs = "erbs"
Aluminium = "Aluminum"
Jam = "Jelly" (seriously, what the ****?)

I could go on, but I should probably do some work.

We changed the pronunciation of 'erbs. The 'h' sound was added in the 19th century.

USA culture

I stopped reading there.

Not at our school, but then ours was a grammar school. Still is, in fact. We even had simply Master of [Subject] in some cases... and sometimes Mistress.
Use as a synonym is more of a recent 'gender-neutral' thing, really. The headmaster also used to be the owner of the school, or at least had some kind of stake in its ownership, hence the differentiation in title.

lol, true. But he was talking about principal which is actually a different word. As above.
I know. I merely wordplay in jest...

The government still runs education. They should be enforcing British English. If someone spells centre as center then they should be marked down for it.

And yes, I'm sure you've been out with plenty of American girls ;)

Lol, I added that bit on because I'm not against Americans, or Americanisms. But I do think we should be promoting our own culture instead of being an addon of America.

I like some American culture. But others parts I have no connection to at all. Americans think very differently than British people.

I watched one of those "looking back" old tv programmes the other day and they included some black and white American programme as though it was broadcast over here. It seems British people know very little about their own culture. It's no wonder we've got social problems.

There used to be Nursery, Infant, Junior, and Senior school. I'm not sure if Sixth form is an American idea too. I just googled and yes, British people are now using the Americanism kindergarten now .. smh

My wife just came in, and said, “Why are you imitating a pendulum?”
I said, “What do you mean?”
She said “I’ve been in the lounge, watching your head swing oh so slowly, left to right, ad infinitum.”
I said, “Sorry honey, I don’t think I’ve ever heard, or read, about so many people getting bent out of shape, (you guys do realise I’m saying it this way on purpose, don’t you?), about so many unimportant things.
“Whaddya mean?”
I said, “When we go Constancia, in Tower Bridge Road, how do you order your steak?”
She said, “Medium to well”, I said, “No, what do you say to the waiter when he says, are you ready to order?”
She said, “I say, can I get the Bife de Lomo, medium to well, with mushrooms and red peppers, no chips, please.”
I said, “BONG! You’re out, do not pass Go, do not collect $200.”
“WTF are you talking about”, she said.
I said, “According to some of the guys on this thread, if I say to you, are my sneakers in the trunk, you have grounds for divorce.”
She said, “You’d never say that, you’d say, are my trainers in the boot.”
“I know that, and you know that, but you also know that I’ll sometimes ask you for a cup o’ Joe, or if you open a bottle of wine, I’m likely ask you to fix me a vodka tonic, apparently these things are strictly no-no.”
She said, “No wonder you’re shaking your head.”
