Got a PS4 Pro not to long ago for the exclusives and I have a fair few games, Only yesterday have I had the time to actually sit down and play though and from a long time PC only gamer I am REALLY impressed especially with God of War and HZD.

Friend of mine ordered 2 copies of Bloodborne somehow and is giving me a copy as a gift, How is it in general ?

One of the best games I've ever played. Amazing atmosphere, clever lore and a decent challenge. If you get it for free it's a no-brainer, really. Might be a bit dated for some and hard to get into but I loved it.

I bought this when I bought my PS4 Pro and still haven't played it. I recently tried Dark Souls 3 and didn't make it past the tutorial level before deciding I didn't like it, so not sure if Bloodborne will be my bag. I really enjoyed the meaty combat in Senua's Sacrifice so was expecting something along those lines.

On the flip side, OP, you should get The Last of Us Remastered and the Uncharted collection + Uncharted 4. Jealous of you playing HZD from the start, it's probably one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've had in recent years. :)

If you didn't like Dark Souls 3 then you probably won't get on with Bloodborne. For me it's up there with the best games this generation. It's fantastic.

If you like an extremely tough challenge, Bloodborne is that game. I liked it in general but I just found it way to difficult for me, think I got up to the 3rd/4th boss and gave up.
HZD is great, first big game I 100% in ages due to how fun it was.

I tried it, I actually loved the atmosphere, the style was great but the game i found was so hard, it was infuriating!! I had to take a time out and went back after a few months and still couldn't get on with it, a shame because I actually like the game, and I know it great. Its a strange feeling! :p

Definitely worth a go :)

I got 10 mins into it and decided it wasn't for me but it must be one of those games you either love or hate because it has a lot of good reviews.

Be patient, learn the enemies patterns and be confident and you will find one of the PS4s best games so far. If not THE best, for me at least. I struggle more and more lately with the mass of bigger triple A games as they just don't hold my attention in the same way that Bloodborne/souls games did

Likewise, I played dark souls and bloodbourne after all the hype suggesting it was one of the best games on the system but only played each for an hour or two before giving up. I just couldn't see the appeal? The controls seemed clunky and the gameplay a repetitive slog of simply memorizing enemies attack patterns.

What would fans of the series say they primarily enjoyed about the game as I feel I should give it another try sometime. All the rave reviews make me wonder if I'm missing something?

No point in doing that. If you don't see the appeal, then you don't see the appeal. Great world/atmosphere, decent challenge, cool weapons, lore, soundwork, bosses and aggression-rewarding combat with dodges that actually require timing and strikes that feel impactful were enough for me, I guess:p

For example, I love the Yakuza series and so do many critics and gamers but there are people here who have given up on it after a couple of hours without even exploring it further. Some things are simply not for everyone and there's nothing wrong with that.

I've been unable to see what people like about the game, it's an ugly, clunky and unpolished mess.

I could maybe forgive the amateur first impressions, but the gameplay just doesn't appeal to me at all. I play games to relax, not be punished :P

I can't agree with the first paragraph at all, it has stunning world design (imo) really thought out architecture etc. From a pure graphics standpoint, it would have been nice if it got the 4k pro treatment but gameplay trumps all.

Your second statement, I do get. It's not for everyone and certainly isn't a game you can just jump on to relax :) but then on the flip side once the game clicks with a player, it is just so moreish and relaxing in its own weird way

That's pretty much my feelings about the game to a tee. I got to 'the hairy priest' and got wrecked so thought I'd try practising a bit more. Went to the big dude with a very big axe near where you start and just couldn't get my dodging down to pat. Got incredibly frustrated (because for all the talk of the game being pixel perfect and any fails are down to the player, it felt very much like the game was at fault to me!) and uninstalled the game in a fit of pique :o

It was free on PSN a few months back too if I remember correctly.

Meh, it was hard to pick out the architecture amidst the sea of brown. The UI is a disgrace. The first 30 mins experience is dreadful from a design standpoint.

I hated the way this tiny little stick-like character swished around an enormous metal weapon that apparently weighed the same as an empty packet of crisps, and the way said weapon didn't appear to collide with anything in the world...it all just felt....bad.

I believe all the talk about there being a rewarding gem of a game under all the shoddy first impressions, but I just can't be arsed to put in the effort to find it.

Definitely marmite.

My only experience of the Soulsborne series is the first Dark Souls, which I picked about a year ago . I barely have time to play games any more (literally no gaming in the past couple of months, for example), so the 22 hours I logged on that is a lot. It's simply brilliant .

My gaming roots are in tough as **** C64, and SNES games (platformers usually) , which often involved a lot a trial and error, and learning of systems, and gradually improving your (the player, rather than the character ) skill level, and methodically using that skill to break down and master the game until you're playing in an almost zen-like state, precisely throwing aside enemies and traversing traps as you play a familiar section for the 10th, 20th, 100th time. Dark Souls was all that, but in a 3d world.

The map, such that I've seen of it in my relatively short play time, is incredibly put together. Not really knowing anything much about the game when I played, the moment of kicking down the undead burg ladder was a real highlight of my time as a gamer, suddenly realising what was going on with the map.

It's an incredible game, and I hear Bloodbourne is basically From Software's masterpiece in the theme. If I had more (any) time for gaming, I'd buy a ps4 just to play it.

If you played Zelda or any older open world adventure in past then you should know that Soul/borne series is all about playing smart. The saying is "if in doubt, roll" 2-3 hits then roll away and wait for open and repeat, may sound boring but understanding this would make the game a lot more playable and fun. The game is indeed challenging no matter what but people that don't even try properly just haven't grasp the basic principle in how the gameplay mechanics work as they just expect you can just hack and slash your way.
Soul series are fun game with a very in-depth lore.

This. I'm fine with people who genuinely don't like the game but I usually hear the whole "clunky" argument from people who don't understand BB's combat at all or just don't have the skill to progress far enough. The first area is really well designed (all od them, frankly, especially the DLC) and uncovering the lore and shortcuts by yourself is great fun. It's not even that hard, TBH. When you learn how to dodge, parry, take advantage of rally, use transformed attacks and when to lock on and strike the combat flows beautifully and each hit feels absolutely brutal. Really thrilling, especially against bosses.
