decent 2nd hand upgrade from a 780

Aren't all of those more closer to £300 though

I could push my budget more to £200 if needed
I'm afraid the 1060 and GTX980 are still more or less in the same ballpark as the GTX780 in terms of grunt, so the best thing you could do is hope that with the new gen Nvidia cards coming the 2nd hand value for the GTX1070 might get plummeted soon (considering the lower priced new 1070 is now only £330). Wouldn't be surprised if you can get a 2nd hand 1070 for may be around £200~£240 either at EOL pricing from retailer, or 2nd hand from individual sellers soon.

I don't agree with that and neither do the benchmarks. The 980 was faster than the 780 Ti at launch and the gap has only widened since then after Kepler fell off a cliff in newer titles. Techspot re-benched a 780 last year and the 480 and 1060 were a full 50% faster in a lot of games. Sometimes the margin was even wider, closer to 75% (hell, the 480 was 90% faster in Doom). The 780 is even slower than the 1050 Ti in some titles:

I was using a 780 until early 2016 and even overclocked past 1200MHz it only just about crawled to matching a stock 970 - and even then it was heavily title-dependent. Just Cause 3 was one of the final games I remember playing on it and performance was all over the place. Those Techspot benchmarks also show the 780 as fluctuating wildly depending on the game. I ended up replacing it with a 980 at the time and saw notably better and much more consistent performance. That said, I'd take a 480 or a 580 over any Maxwell card except the 980 Ti now. Probably over the 1060 too. The arse seems to have fallen out of the used market for them, so they fall within the stated price range and would be a decent, if not mind-blowing upgrade. Obviously 1070-level performance would be even better, but you're simply not getting that for £150 right now. You can also sell the 780 for £100+ on the jumble sale site (I sold a 770 for £80 a few weeks ago on there), so it's not like the upgrade would cost much overall.

That must have been one record breaking GTX780.

However if i were upgrading from a 780 i'd want a 980ti , that would give you a MASSIVE uplift in performance. Over the last 5 years the 980ti and r9 290x were the real gems.

I agree with the marine I wouldn't bother with anything less powerful than a 1070 and would wait a couple of weeks see what happens to second hand prices when new cards come out.

Brand new 1070's have been close to £300 and if 2060 comes in cheaper and faster then second hand prices will drop a lot. Or just grab your self a 2060 on interest free credit if the cards turn out to be any good at least you wouldn't have any worries about second hand card breaking on you.

When I said in the same ballpark, I did not mean it as the 780 is as fast as the 980, but more to do with the 980 hasn't pull itself far enough away from the 780 to justify as a worthwhile upgrade- which is why I said 980Ti minimum as an upgrade.

Really guys why keep going on bout 1070 and 980ti they are out of budget. Its not like a used rx580 wouldn't obliterate the 780 and to be honest it's not far behind the 980ti these days in many games. Saw a few a couple months back on the mm selling for about 170. Might even be able to pick one up at 150 with people about to buy these new nvidia cards soon.

That's what i'd do OP, sell the 780 for 60-70 If you can and chip in max another 100 for a 580 second hand. It would be a massive difference. Walks all over the 780ti which in turn is 30% faster than a standard 780.

Coming from a 780GHz albeit it had the nuts clocked off it - I have to echo the above you are likely going to be disappointed in what £150 gets you - you aren't talking a clear upgrade until you hit the 980ti or 1070 unless you spend a lot of time playing a game that Kepler falls down badly in.

Caveat to that if you have an older A1 revision 780 that doesn't boost or overclock very well - then some of the cards like the 580 would be a clearer upgrade.

Depends - A stepping 780 that is poor to average out the box boost and limited overclocking sure - a decent B stepping card a 580 really isn't obliterating it in real world usage outside of some titles Kepler falls down in.

To put it into perspective my B stepping 780GHz with its out the box boost (1260MHz or something I can't remember now) was barely slower than vanilla 780 SLI if you limited those cards to 900MHz as some reviewers seem to have done. At 1300MHz it was hot on the heels of the stock RX480/580 cards - obviously they could overclock themselves to pull more away from it.

Unless you can grab a good clocking 980 that can get to 1500mhz that would be a viable solution other than that I agree the 980 Ti is the minimum I'd go for. Maxwell loves to overclock and with that said the rx 580 isn't even remotely in the same league as the Ti.

My 980 Ti clocked at 1550mhz and 8ghz on the memory is approx twice as fast as a 780
