Replacement Double Glazing - ballpark pricing

We decided on refurb/upgrading of existing units to double glazed.

As per eviled's suggestion we changed the bay window to fixed panes except on the middle window - they're on the ground floor so cleaning isn't a problem and better security as a bonus.

A sash refurb with double glazing was pretty much in spitting distance of good quality replacement units so for a period property with solid stone walls it was a no brainer. However you might need to hunt around the refurb companies, some of them can be as dodgy as upvc companies in their pricing strategy.

I need 10 windows and 4 doors. I'm going to measure and fit my self. I figure by the 5th window I should have it figured out ;)

Obviously it's summer but has it cut down on noise and made the rooms significantly warmer?

Who did you use for the Refurb if you don't mind me asking.

Yeah that might have made them skip all that crap.

After our experience Ive made it my mission to deter anyone from them lol.

I just feel a company that uses tactics like they do (my case with the fake phone call isn't isolated) don't deserve any business over a small independent firm who likely take time out of their time fitting in order to come and quote. The guys from Safestyle who price aren't fitters. They are pushy salesmen and it all winds me up.

Think I best at back out hahah. It's funny because no other company in my life has ever riled me like they do.
Followup to this as this thread got bumped. I got Safetyle out, absolutely awful. They were not interested once they realised that i had much better local quotes, and sought about telling me that their windows are better, etc. Final price was around £10k (!!!) more than i am paying through a local firm who are now booked to carry out the work.

It riles me that they can possibly get away with the prices that they quoted me, they are borderline scammers really - only the vulnerable and least able to afford are likely to use them :(

Yep it should actually be illegal to charge the prices they do. They have the power to advertise on prime time TV. Between the soaps that old people watch. As a result naive people assume they are a great company.

The price they open with is utterly bonkers. You can build an extension cheaper than they initially quote your windows.

Eyes on this thread. Looking at getting 11 windows (one of which is large, double wide), 1 set of patio doors and the front door/window combo. Triple glazed preferably...

Why go for triple glazing? I thought the expense had a diminishing returns. Ie £5k for a 10-20% improvement in noise/heat transfer.

Does anyone have any idea how badly it effects your period property if you did change to uPVC. My partner is persistent on uPVC for maintenance free and it's cheaper.

But I'm reading bits that say in fact wood outperforms on a cost basis (ie uPVC lasts 20-25 then a whole new set of windows fitted. Unlike wood which just needs preserved and painted.

I live a stones throw from the A1, I want to ensure sound insulation. Open to suggestions on best double glazing to get the best alternative.

Acoustic laminate 6.8mm. But it really depends on your budget.

You wouldn’t have to have both panes in it either, you could go 4mm toughened softcoat/low e/k if you wanted for a better u value

acoustic double glazing will be better for sound insulation than triple glazing in theory (and cheaper)

I have both in my house and they both seem very good at keep noise out

Laminate glass (especially 6.8) is the most expensive glass my place sells. Just sayin.

Triple glazing is good at keeping noise levels very low, (I have it in my house) I couldn't say which is better, but if youre secluded then laminate could be a good idea, it will stop thieves from just smashing any door glass and walking in.

New wooden windows will be far more expensive than PVC, and I cant see them outlasting them, all you need to do with a good PVC window is oil the hinges every year and give them a clean now and again.

Hi all
What do people reckon to replacement sealed units, is this a good idea?
We have pvc frames that have been there for over twenty years, but look ok to the untrained eye.

Thanks

my house has basically every type of glass and window :D (except PVC)
  1. front + rear bedrooms are double glazed refurbished sash units
  2. north facing alley gable windows - very cold - are new hardwood double glazed casements made to look like sash windows
  3. rear extension is triple glazed
  4. attic velux windows are acoustic double glazed unit
The laminated acoustic glazing in the velux wasn't much extra at all, triple glazing was much more, but then probably isn't 6.8mm
