A death threat of sorts. What would GD do?

A funny thing happened on the way home from work today.

I was walking home at ~2240 through the middle of Hanley when someone came up to me and wanted my attention. I was listening to a book so I didn't want to be bothered, but paused it and took my headphones off to be polite. Maybe they were asking for directions or something. That happens.

Not this time. They asked for a tenner and when I refused they threatened to stab me. "I'll shank you right now", to be precise.

I decided they weren't a credible threat, so I said "OK, let's go to the police station", turned my back on them and started walking in the direction of the police station. Not what they expected me to do, so they went off in a different direction, saying something I paid no attention to. Probably another meaningless threat. Then I walked home via a different route, stopping at random intervals to look around in case I'd underestimated the degree of threat they posed and they were following me home. They weren't.

So...what would GD do? I could report it to the police. I have exact time and location and I assume it was covered by the numerous surveillance cameras. But I couldn't prove anything and I doubt if the cameras are good enough for someone to lipread from them. I probably couldn't identify them with legally significant certainty. Just some unpleasant person doing a bad job of pretending to be more dangerous than they are.

Also, I had a grand total of 45p on me anyway.

EDIT: Removed the edits made by this board, which didn't like me referring to this person of obvious good character as being akin to a rectal orifice.

Worth reporting it just in case the perpetrator is known and can be recognized. A friend of mine was set on in Hanley after giving one of the "low life's" a fiver by the rest of his mates. There is a fair chance it was one of the denizens of Hope Street/ Brighter Futures brigade.

How common is something like that?

Personally nowadays may as well report it. At least it will take a bit of weight off your conscience. When younger probably would have not bothered as have never had any contact with police and like it to stay that way even if its to report something.

Report it, probbaly nothing gets done but if he s doing it to others it might help him be identified or get picked up.

I would like to think 2 reports about the same person with cctv from unrelated people would be enough for the police to do something

Yeah report it on non-emergency number or in person at the station just in case anything else happens.

I've actually been surprised at the police response last couple of times I've had to ring them - road filling up with emergency vehicles US police chase style 10 seconds after I got off the phone kind of stuff :s

Report it, even if they can't do anything if it happens to someone else they will have your statement, if he tries it on someone else and he stabs them and you don't report it you'll feel pretty poopy.

I wouldn't be that surprised. I've been involved in reporting incidents at my workplace and the police response has been uniformly suitable. Report a theft and a copper comes by a bit later to get a copy of video and some statements. Report an assault and the vehicles are incoming while you're still on the phone. Last time a knife and two groups were involved and that triggered the full monty within a few minutes. Two cars of usual coppers and then a van with armed and armoured coppers. The only thing missing was a helicopter.

I'll pop down to the police station on Wednesday. Can't do it today - 13 hour shift, 5th consecutive day of days like that. I'll be fit for nothing.

Don't want to go into details but when the operator said on the phone "a few units are on their way" I thought she was just saying that and we'd maybe get one car drop by like an hour later - 10 seconds after I finished the call they started turning up and it didn't just stop at 1-2 cars LOL. Myself and another guy were staring at each other in disbelief.

Congratulations, you've just been visited by one of Hanley's resident parasites. The police won't do anything about them when they're off their heads on spice and ******** in the street, so they there's **** all chance of them doing anything over this.

Where abouts was this? Wasn't down near Hope Street by any chance was it?

Report it, could've happened to someone he thought more vulnerable and had walked away with more than a tenner.

I would report to the Police, if only to ensure that it makes it into the statistics. But it would be a good idea just in case that person goes on to actually stab someone.

Reporting to the police is a waste of time in my experience, I had a similar experience at the start of the year - a chav wrecked on amphetamine started shouting at me on the other side of the road, (i ignore him) he decides to come after me, follows me down the road, before getting in front of me and stopping me in my tracks, spends the next 5 minutes getting in my face asking for a fight, (I'm taler, bigger stronger <ex swimmer and rugby player> this guy has no chance, but I refuse to hit him <I have a previous criminal record for Affray, so I know what happens if I misjudge or make a mistake..> it goes on and on in the middle of the street, me refusing to fight him - until he says he's going to stab me to death.

My reply is 'Ok, well I'm calling the cops now' (pull my phone out and dial 999 in front of him) the guy goes absolutely insane, screaming and jumping at me, getting right in my face, literally spitting in my face, (the whole time I'm on the phone to the 999 operative, who has actually patched into the CCTV camera and can physically see me whilst I'm on the phone, police are on their way) eventually he runs at me and tries to jump me, I knock him to the ground - he lays in the fetal position, groaning for about 10 seconds, before jumping up and running off.

The police turn up, drive around for about 10 minutes - then claim they can't find him, the CCTV footage - whilst showing the incident wasn't good enough to get an identification as he was wearing a tracksuit with a hoodie... I thought that was the end of it.

The revelation came, a few months ago - when the same guy, again wrecked on amphetamine was stood 200yds from my flat selling drugs to the art students, I went and stood nearby to him and was 100% certain it was the same guy, I called 101 - told them, they found the original case and reported it.... 2 days later he's there again, and again, I call 101 again - nobody does anything, until now I see him almost every day lol... I've just given up worrying about it now, but for it points out that the police just don't seem interested - he's there every day, selling drugs, smashed off his face - god knows how long it is until he has a go at someone else, or even someone not physically capable or infirm? who knows..

You said yourself they didn't look like a credible threat and if they were you'd probably be laid in a hospital now having turned your back on them. Unless they were holding a knife I wouldn't bother wasting the police's time.
