P20 Pro replacement

Ok... I was taking photos walking around on holiday, put my P20 Pro in my swimming trunks pocket and then went lake swimming having forgotten it was in there. Basically, it's at the bottom of a very deep lake. :o

(Swimming trunks should NOT have pockets!!)

I can get around £400 for this from insurance. This is not enough for a replacement P20 Pro, but is there something else that would do me...

I want:
Good camera. I really loved the night mode and 3x optical zoom on the P20 Pro, but I could live without these for a generally decent camera at a cheaper price point.
Big screen. Around 6" ideally. 5.5"+ okay.
Decent storage. 128GB internal OR something that takes SD cards.

I don't care about:
Gaming/processor/graphics performance (I'm only going to use it for reading pdfs/docs, web browsing, photography).
Having the best DAC.
Aesthetics/build materials.

I'd like to keep the excess spend above what I get from insurance to a minimum, but quite okay with around an extra £100-£150 - so ideally a £500-550ish phone price (new or MM purchase, no ebay sales...)

Any help much appreciated! :)

Which lake mate? :D

How about a Huawei Mate 10 Pro?

Bled. Bloody beautiful lake, but at least 15m deep where I was swimming and death to phones! :)

I'll look at the Mate 10 Pro. Thing is, apart from researching the flagship camera-phones earlier this year I have no clue whatsoever what is on the market. Thanks for the pointer!

I have the mate 10 pro, highly recommend it

Yep, having spent this morning trawling through reviews, it looks like the Mate 10 Pro is stonking value. It basically seems like it's got most of what I liked about the P20 Pro without the third camera. Camera performance still looks good, and although I'll miss the night mode and hybrid zoom of the P20 Pro, I can't justify the extra £250+ it would cost.

Can't believe the Mate 10 Pro can be had new for under £400 given its specs, tbh.

Well, Mate 10 Pro ordered.

Thanks for the tip.

I'll miss the extra camera features of the P20 Pro, but at least this way I'm not out of pocket (assuming insurance doesn't try any shenanigans...)

Good choice mate. I’ve ordered one too, trying to get the Mrs to change from s7, specs look great for the price.

Recieved the mate 10 pro today and wow the build quality is great, all glass, slippery as hell trough.

Seems like a decent solid phone, loads of features, nice screen.

Very impressed for the price.

Bare in mind if you put a 3 sim into one it will auto brand it 3 (3 splash Screen etc) and you can’t get rid of it, even factory reset won’t remove it. Good news is there is an option in developer options that turns off auto update off (this is the branding update, not firmware update), turn phone on with no sim and turn this option off first.

Yeah, for the price I am extremely impressed too. I put a Spigen Rugged Armor case on it, and it's very comfortable to hold. Feels a bit more compact than the P20 Pro which feels a bit better in the hand. The P20 Pro had a fair bit of top-heaviness as well, possibly due to the extra camera hardware near the top. I can notice the slightly reduced screen size on this phone, though, even though it's not much on paper (not helped by the non-removable software buttons at the bottom). Pleased that it came with a pre-fitted screen protector like the P20 Pro, too. Nice touch that.

Apart from the third camera and all the features that made possible it seems pretty similar to the P20 Pro, and whilst I do miss those extra features, on value for money the Mate 10 Pro wins out easily, I think.

(I'm on Voda so didn't have any problems with the branding)

Could you not have checked the likes of gumtree or similar sites? I know they're not the best of sites but just had a nosey and there was p20 pros going from £450-£550 in my city.

But enjoy the Mate!

Yeah, possibly. I'm a bit wary of second-hand phones, though. Possibly just me being paranoid, but I know that when I lost mine I needed all sorts of documentation for the insurance claim that wouldn't have been as easy to get for a second-hand phone. Plus, whilst I did find some new P20 Pros for around £560, given that I got the Mate 10 Pro for almost £200 less than that I just couldn't justify the extra expense for basically a couple of (admittedly very impressive) camera features that I'll probably only use quite infrequently.

Nice one mate.

What firmware are you on if you don’t mind me asking? Mine says latest is .142

Hmm. Looks like I've got .132 (unless I'm looking at the wrong field - full build is 8.0.0.132(C782)
Thanks. Mine is the c432 which is the uk variant (locked to Vodafone), I believe yours (c782) is the Eu variant which Cpw and amazon sell (sim free)

Does your WiFi calling work ok with your Vodafone sim?

That makes sense. I didn't buy from there, but yeah it's a SIM free version.

I didn't even know about Wifi calling tbh. I have unlimited minutes anyway, so not sure I'd actually need it?

No, but your phone is!

(Sorry)...

 Ouch!

Dude... too soon! :p

(Fair cop... I walked into that one :o)

It’s when you have no phone signal and it uses WiFi to make calls (using your minutes), very handy :)
