So, let's say that (theoretically) you arrived at your holiday accommodation to discover that work is being done on the swimming pool and it will be closed for the duration of your holiday. Other pools are available, however they further away and overcrowded due to the main (and much closer) pool being out of action. Upon raising this with the tour company rep they apologise and offer 200 Euros as a full and final settlement for your party. Does anyone have any relevant thoughts as to whether this is an appropriate and/or fair offer?

I can imagine that you might be tempted to take it as the quick and easy solution to the issue. However, is this amount fair, or would some sort of post holiday claim for loss of enjoyment be likely to deliver oodles more cash?

Curious if OP is in this position as it’s something you hear more frequently.

The thing this comes down to is do you think 200 Euro justifies the inconvenience caused? If yes take the money and move on. If you feel outraged that it’s a ridiculous sum and you paid thousands for the luxury’s offered then by all means make your case that 200 doesn’t justify the inconvenience caused.

For me a lot would depend on the overall experience with the tour company.

Wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference to me; building work does not get booked one day and start the next. The hotel and the rep will have known building work was going on and therefore all customers should have been contacted and something put on that website about that particular hotel. No, they allowed people to arrive only to find a major part of peoples holiday was not available.

200 euros is not enough and i would start a claim through my holiday insurance/resolver etc.

Are we talking about a £9.50 Sun holiday or a £10k Kuoni luxury package?

I agree with him^ that this doesn't happen overnight and that you should've been informed beforehand so the travel company was clearly omitting it to make the sale, in which case I'd take them to the cleaners as that's simply dishonesty.

Isn't really clear in the first post what the nature of the work was - but if it was significant reworking that would have been planned well in advance then yeah that is poor on the part of the operator - it could have been unexpected pump/filtering failure, etc.

Yep, fair point. I think we need more info ie was pool closed due to turd clogging etc ie was not scheduled and also how much was the holiday.

We paid over £3k for a 1 week in Cape Verde last year (was a beautiful resort). However, there was not much to do outside of the resort, so the sole purpose was cocktails by the pool during the day and more cocktails by the bar/beach at night. Had the pool been closed the duration of my holiday i would have been seeking more than 200 euros compo.

They should inform you of building work before you fly giving you the option to cancel or offer different accommodation. You can claim a significant refund if it truly is ruining your holiday (noise, inconvenience, etc) take videos and photos.

However, if these other pools are within acceptable range, and the building work is not causing any inconvenience then it may not be that easy a claim.

Only you can say.

I had never done a package holiday before but when my son was 6 months old we just wanted a nice easy retreat so thought we'd try an all inclusive. They informed us 1 week before we flew that there was building work at a neighbouring hotel and they would situate us as far from it as possible... when we arrived we were placed in a room right next to the building work which was on an industrial scale where there were jack hammers going constantly and cranes going over our terrace. Baby couldn't sleep, wife was stressed. They could not find us another room so less than 3 hours after arriving we booked another hotel, packed up and drove there - best decision ever, was a beautiful 5star all inclusive with accommodation/staff/facilities/food a million times better. I got a full refund of the hotel expense from the tour company after providing them video. Never going to use a tour company again though!

Yeah depends a lot how big a factor the pool was as part of the holiday and/or if it was whether the operator tried to make other arrangements or whether the guests had to do that for themselves, etc.

My kids pretty much spent the entire holiday in the pool. They loved it.
I'd want a damn site more than 200 euros. You pay A LOT of money for a holiday!

How much was it?

It depends how much you paid for the holiday, how long were you there, how many of you were there, how far and crowded are the other pools?

Depends how much you've paid, £50 super saver out of Sun 200 seems fair, £10k all inclusive then no. Weekend away hardly going to be a inconvenience, two weeks maybe.

Such an open-ended question, as people have said you've left out so much information nobody can make a proper judgement, fill in the blanks and we can then advise you accordingly.

Also I take it you know the address of the hotel so the letterbox & poop needs mentioning just to balance the sensible answers.
