What do I do? I'm thinking to Cyberpunk 2077

First of all, I'm new to Overclockers and I'm not tech savvy even in the slightest, so I apologise now for my ignorance. I've had my current PC for I believe just over 3 years now and it was pre-built, these are the main specs, (say if I've left something major out, sorry):

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GHz
Installed Memory (RAM) 16.0 GB DDR3
System Type: 64-bit Operating System
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970

I'm thinking towards the likes of 'Cyberpunk 2077' and I want to be able to run it well and other AAA games of the time, so if I upgraded soon I was concerned I would be left behind as technology improves but I honestly don't know. I plan to eventually build a PC from scratch, and I ideally wouldn't want to far exceed the £2000 barrier. Any advice on what I should do and/or PC components and a case would be most appreciated. Thanks.

i usually use this site for a rough idea of potential game running, take the information as you will, its just and indicator, only real game play will tell you the answers and looking at it, your system sits sort of in the middle, boosting your performance with a 1060 6gb will better you.

you can select your parts for a result of if it will run, for your current system it states medium-high settings.

@orbitalwalsh
What's your current Res model/resolution/Hz ?
Also what storage do you currently have ?

Lastly , do you know the model or Chipset of your board ? I.e H310 or z87 etc

Hi, I believe I usually game at 1920x1080 @60hz(hope what I'm saying is correct haha). Basically, I originally purchased an 'ACER - S1 Series S271HLCBID Full HD 27" LED Monitor' again about 3 years ago. Recently out of sheer interest, I hooked up a 'Panasonic TX-L32E5B 32'' Full HD 1080p LCB TV' that I used for console gaming and occasional TV watching a few years back, it's a bit of an odd dual screen setup anyway.

I have 232GB left currently from 930GB, I have 1TB storage overall I guess the rest is taken up with system files etc...

I think the answer to your last question is here:

Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd.
Model: H81M-S2H
Chipset: Intel, Haswell, Rev. 06
Southbridge: Intel, H81, Rev. C2
LPCIO: ITE, IT8620

I hope I've answered your questions somewhat and thanks for the response :)

Thanks for the taking the time to respond to me and providing me with that link, it's much appreciated. :)

I honestly wouldn't put too much into your current setup if you intend on building on new PC from scratch. You could get a new high end GPU but your power supply might not be up to it and your cpu may bottleneck it. Your RAM CPU and motherboard won't transfer to a new system.

What screen resolution do you intend on using? The are basically three choices 1080p, 1440p and "4K". You'll need a high end guide for 4K e.g. a 1080Ti or Vega64 for 1440p a 1070/Vega64 upwards. Most modern cards will run 1080p well.

For a £2k budget I'd allocate funds as below:

GPU £500+ get the fastest you can afford
CPU £250 CPUs last a long time
Motherboard £150 or less
CPU cooler £100 or less
RAM DDR4 16GB £150 price is dropping
PSU £100 good quality brand
Case £150 or less
SSD or Nvme drive 500GB £80-£150 price dropping
1440p monitor IPS 100Hz+ £400

Just a rough guide. Lots of great help here when you are ready to talk specific parts.

Yeah I was just interested to see what I could do with a £2k budget but I might exceed that in the future when I can better assess my options. I would love to game at "4k" but I guess most people would haha. I see Samsung and LG have premiered new "8k" TVs just recently so I imagine that will be the next big thing. Thanks for the help though, greatly appreciated. :)

No problem. 4k will be around for a very long time. Most people are still on 1080p. The 20XX Nvidia cards should be good for high frame rates at 4k. If you want >60fps at 4k you need to buy a high end card. Just buy wisely with the rest of the budget. BTW CPU is less of an issue at 4k as you are GPU limited. Buying today I'd go decent AM4 X470 motherboard 1600X then upgrade to a 3700X when the 7nm CPUS come out. Add a 1080Ti in and you'd do 4k easily. :)

Yeah I'm still on 1080p myself, I've just got to tell myself to hold off when I'm staring at all the high end stuff haha. In all seriousness, I would love to have a better understanding of computers and the terminology to go with, I think I need to invest some time into research or something anyway. Thanks again. :)

well if you got 2k to spend on all of it then something like this should see you through for awhile

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,937.82 (includes shipping: £15.90)

i didnt include windows, but you can drop to a cheaper psu to include that.

That's a lot of pc for the money. A bit more competition in the market and dropping RAM SSD prices and a decent PC for £1500ish should possible next year.

All this advice is greatly appreciated, thanks for taking the time to look all of that up. :)

Push the 1080ti Aorus for £715, or other brand with triple cooler or 2.5slot design .that card will heat up a lot! Have a look at evga forum about it . Bit then your same price as RTX 2080 which will be slightly faster naturally some leaks have been spilled already .

might need to change case for that change? only reason i chose that 1080ti was because it was the cheapest quickest one under £700 and i knew how pricey g-sync monitors will be, didnt really see much from intel in the bundles, too many i7 7700's.
