Called them up to cancel, they offered a nice deal. £35 for first 6 months then £38 till 2020 for my 350mbit.

I know it will go up again during that time so I will cancel before 2020 as I be moving anyway.

Called up at the weekend to cancel, got a call back today and was offered £40 for 100mb & Mix TV.

Said I'd been offererd a better deal with BT and I was looking for HD channels and BT sports. Got 200mb & Full House TV for £45.

Pleased with that as it's £15 cheaper than what we've been paying. Tried to get a free V6 box out of it as well as we've still got the old box but they were saying it'd cost £70 to get that sent out. I know they were doing a deal a while ago where they were sending out free V6 boxes to existing customers but believe that promotion ended earlier this year.

Anyone had any luck getting a free V6 box when negotiating a new contract? Tempted to phone them up again and try my luck.

Just called to push my cancellation back a couple of weeks and give them a chance at hooking me for another 12/18 months.
Still no interest, best they could do was £42 / month for 100MB and phone, or £35 for 100MB with no phone.
Much disappoint :(
Don't call them except to cancel, they'll call you. At least they did with me in the last week of cancellation.

Internet keeled over last night, SH2 lost connection, rebooted it 4 or 5 times & finally got a connection. Ran the test function on the VM website which seemed to show there was an issue as it said trying to fix things however download speed is now around 15-40mb & upload 1-3mb
Its disconnected itself another 4 or 5 times since so I'm guessing there's a fault somewhere.
Away this weekend so will have to wait till Monday to contact virgin to get an engineer out.

Posted in the VM forums but not expecting any reply.

Strange how it's happened just after I've taken out a new 12 month contract.

My VM SH3 fails to save my wifi settings when it’s powered on and off so VM are sending out a replacement.

Are they painless to swap over?

Phoned up Virgin yesterday to get a package for our new house which we will be moving into tomorrow. Been with Virgin at current address for around 7 years but the package is staying here and family are taking the bill on.

Got offered 350mb and basic TV with landline for £47pm / free activation and installation which I am very happy with, installation is Wednesday which was a quick turn around.

Didn't want the landline but he insisted it was cheaper with it and told them I was only interested in 350mb and basic TV, at first they told me it was £42 for 350mb with landline without basic TV and £50 without landline.

Not a bad deal. I think the idea of it being cheaper (generally) is that by you having it you are likely to use it. If you haven't got one they can't rely on additional income from it.

Hi,

Unsure what I actually need, I have wired my house with 12 network ports (2 in each bedroom with 6 in the living room & they all meet in the dining room).

Am I correct in assuming I should put my virgin box into modem mode from living room into where the 12 network ports all meet and then hook it up to a wireless router and then to a 12/16 port switch?

Does the above sound correct or am I making it more complicated then it should be?

If the above is correct does anyone have a suggestion on what Router & Switch I should get or maybe just the one if I only need one?

I am assuming switches/routers come with some sort of hardware/software firewalls?

Thanks all.

You'll need your switch where all of the cables meet.

You don't necessarily need another router. You can leave the Virgin hub configured as router and connect it to your central switch.

If you want a new router then put the hub into modem mode. The location of the new router won't matter so long as you can cable to and from it.

Switches don't come with firewalls. Routers do.

For your switch pick any unmanaged Gigabit switch you like the look of that has enough ports.

If you want a new router you'll need to come up with a budget and some requirements.

If you're only adding the router to improve the wireless then there are other options such as wireless access points.

Hi Bremen,

Thanks for that, I haven't read up about computers/network stuff in years so very much out of the loop.

So I can plug a network cable from my virgin super hub 3 (Think it is this one) and just plug that straight into an unmanaged switch 12/16 port one and it should work fine?

I haven't really thought about a budget yet as I wasn't sure what I actually needed, if I just need an unmanaged 12/16 port switch I have seen those ranging from £20 - £100+ which I guess depends on different options they all have.

Thanks for replying :)

Yes. No configuration required.

Unmanaged switches all are basically the same from a performance point-of-view. Make sure you get a Gigabit switch and not 10/100.

A 16 port unmanaged Gigabit switch is going to cost ~£60.

A 12 port switch would only give you 11 usable ports as you loose one for the connection to the router.

Thanks for replying :)

Not just me then. I'm paying £42 for 350 only. I got that price a few months ago so still in contract. Was kind of hoping for a price increase so I could try and get them down under £40. Ah well, can't complain.
I pay £40 for 350 only. Don’t think you’ll get any cheaper than £40 tbh. It is their flagship service.

Also got a price rise letter . Not happy, but we're too far from the BT cabinet to get a decent FTTC speed so we're stuck with virgin :(

Off topic, but noticed this in your location .Never seen anyone else except my wife's family (who live in and around there) use that word!

Speeds down pan again tonight for first time in a few months, actually surprised that VM have arranged to send a engineer tomorrow instead of the week wait they usually give out.

Shall see what they say tomorrow but no doubt it'll be a area fault or over utilization creeping back in.

No surprise tested this morning before work and back at full speed, expecting engineer to turn up and say they can't find anything wrong, hopefully a congestion fault gets raised.
