Try telling this to my missus who insists on one. Bloody thing! I think its purpose is so you have something soft and carpety under your feet when letting rip, but I'm not sure and I wear slippers anyway

Actually no as smooth floor isn't good place for germs.. a mat stays wet has nooks and crannies is perfect for germs

Surely a spot of pee or what have you is less unhygienic sitting on top of a tile / vinyl / laminate floor than sinking in to a carpeted mat?
