Hi all.

I'm starting to look at putting together a PC for my son ready for Xmas since I will be upgrading my own once the 9700k is released.

So from my PC the parts I can salvage are:

[*] 1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - OEM £187.99
[*] 1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £89.99
[*] 2 x Avexir Core Blue Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (AVD3U16000904G-2CW) - Blue Light £69.98

I've also already got him a 2nd hand 750W PSU, so thats covered.
Will need GPU, case, cooler, HDD, SSD, Keyboard, mouse and monitor. Don't think i;m missing anything else?

I had the CPU overclocked to 4.7ghz with a Cryorig R1 Twin Tower cooler which I would put in to a new case if you can find one that fits, but I'd preferably have a smaller case and get cooler that will fit that, even if it costs in performance.

Anyway, I don't want to spend more than around £400, a little over is fine I guess.
He plays games like Fortnite and Minecraft.

If you could recommend some decent parts for whats needed, I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Would consider it only worthy for word processing PC:
It has lousy cooling and PSU on top design which expired dozen years ago.
(that position puts stress on quality of PSU)

This would be lot better design.

Though rear fan could use some Dremel for more open hole instead of that stamped crappy mesh.
This would have better size mesh for rear exhaust fan:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/bitfenix-comrade-midi-tower-black-ca-153-bx.html

And this Zalman would have actually really good cooling capability:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/zalman-z3-midi-tower-black-ca-070-za.html

Case is such easy component to keep over upgrades so it isn't worth of trying to save few pounds in it.

This Toshiba would be little cheaper than Seagate:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/tosh...rmance-hard-drive-hdwd110uzsva-hd-044-ts.html

And TeamGroup would give 240GB SSD for nearly same price as that Kingston making it lot better choise:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/team...gbps-3d-nand-solid-state-drive-hd-004-tg.html
With some empty reserve for wear evening algorithms and what Windows needs, 120GB drive is fast half full.

Though if PC isn't going to have more stuff on it than some handfull games there might not be need for HDD.

There are also £20 cheaper GTX 1050 Tis.
Don't think there's really going to be much of performance difference.
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/pali...ci-express-gddr5-graphics-card-gx-03s-pl.html
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/inno...ddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-06j-in.html
Certainly better get case which is decent and can be reused for long time.

Also that Cryorig M9 likely can't hold higher overclocks without lots of noise if you intended to keep CPU overclocked.
There are 120mm fanned heatsinks which don't cost that much more.
Though CPU cooler clearances of case would have to be checked.

Those arent TIs :P

I was gonna overclock to maybe 4ghz and see how temps were. Ill look for another cooler, didnt notice it was a small fan :S

Missed that in hurry.

Coolermaster Hyper 212 has 120mm fan.
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cooler-master-hyper-212-led-air-cpu-cooler-hs-07a-cm.html
Though that 160mm height might not fit.
157mm of this Raijintek would be safer:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/raijintek-themis-direct-contact-cpu-cooler-hs-001-rt.html
And this is 155mm:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/alpenfohn-grand-clock-ner-rev.-b-cpu-cooler-120mm-hs-025-al.html

It's hard to find CPU cooler clearance for many of those cases.
For Bitfenix Comrade one number was 155mm, though that Raijintek Themis is used in this:
http://www.pcgameware.co.uk/reviews/cases/bitfenix-comrade-case-review/

Using 150mm high cooler without any issues is mentioned in this Zalman review:
https://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/6311/zalman-z3-plus-white-mid-tower-chassis-review/index6.html
Not sure what this heatsink is, while quite similar it doesn't fully match Prolimatech Megahalems.

Ok, so I've taken a look at the cases and I can go for

The 240GB SSD you've mentioned for the same price as the Kingston 120GB though... won't it be a lesser quality?

Bitfenix Comrade has modern layout and at least exhaust fan mesh actually made for 120mm fan.
Though mesh could be better and especially those fixed drive cages restrict intake airflow notably even when adding second intake fan:
http://www.pureoverclock.com/Review-detail/bitfenix-comrade-case-review/4/
So it's really rather basic/low end case for cooling, even if adding second intake fan.

Makes that Zalman Z3 look high end in comparison.
It even comes with three fans at stock and would certainly have cooling capacity expansion reserve to be fit for rather high end PC.
I think we can both see daddy getting troubled by demands for better PC after some years...:p
Also this Cougar would be lot more future proof:

Wouldn't exactly trust low end Kingston SSDs to hold any higher standards.
Kingston has at least once been caught in changing insides of their budget oriented model.
IIRC it was 300 something serie with earlier production run drives assembled/made in Taiwan giving respectable results, while later Chinese models were lot slower.
And for speed avoiding smallest drive of the serie usually.
With fewer NAND chips smallest drives have lower parallelism in reads/writes.
(controllers of SSDs use memory chips like striping for HDDs)

Besides TeamGroup, also WD would have 120GB drive lot cheaper than that Kingston:

The desk area that the pc is going in is a bit tight so i wanted the case to be as small as possible which is why I originally went for the Aerocool.
I guess I could work with the Zalman since it comes with a few fans.

I'll go for the TeamGroup SSD then.

Thanks for the input.

Ssd drives are mostly the sameish speed...
Benchmarks are based on their cache speed (ddr4l) on higher end stuff..so ye.. i wouldnt ve too bothered..
I got 3 ssd drives n they all seem the sameish to me
