Just bought a used 5820k with a Gigabyte GA-X99-Gaming 5P mobo for a good price. I only have the budget for 16gb at the moment, but plan on upgrading to 32gb in the future.

I was pretty set on this: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cors...hannel-kit-black-cmk16gx4m2b32-my-456-cs.html earlier but, after being side-tracked reading about Samsung B-Die I seem to have plugged myself with too much info to make an educated decision on what is best for my platform.

If I've read into stuff correctly it will need to have XMP support to clock up to 3200. Is it more cost effective to buy the 3000 and clock it to 3400 (that's the mobo's max)? Is Samsung B-Die better only when used with Ryzen?

Cheers.

B die is more compatable and overclockable on all platforms. If on x99 buy 2x8gb 3200mhz b die would be your best option.

You know you need 4 modules to use quad channel on X99? Memory clocking can be quite limited on X99/5820k depending on your memory controller and board so fast DDR4 is of limited benefit

You could look at 4x4GB kits which would be cheaper.

That's good to know, thanks. I wasn't aware of this.

What am I looking at realistically, best bang for buck? Like you say, no point in stumping up for higher clocks if it's of limited benefit.

Thanks for the advice. After reading through that article thoroughly and then spending copious amounts of time scouring the market I went for 2400 and managed to find 4 8's for Quad at a very reasonable price.

Nice find, a 32GB quad kit will last you nicely on X99.

i just got a kit of 4x4 3000mhz and it runs no problem....
i know it can do 3466mhz on x299 but i cant get it to run any higher than xmp ...
