Hi. i am looking to move abroad somwhere in Mainland europe and was wondering if you ExPats could give me some advice on what to do and prepare for such a big move?

For a bit of background i currently have my own limited company as an IT consultant(Android developer) and i am looking to move and work in the same field somwhere in europe.

I dont have a mortgage and currently live with my GF who is onboard for joining me too.

Anyways here are some things i consider on my checklist:

  • Close limited company, pay the 10% or whatever the closing taxt is and take the rest out
  • setup bank account in chosen country
  • Setup accomodation(most likely renting first)
  • Sort out medical healthcare(How do i transfer my medical records to the chose country)
  • Register for countries tax system?
  • Close up all subscriptions i have here(Sky TV, broadband etc)
  • Sell my car(Or can i trade it in the country i will move to, for example germany?)
  • Arrange for moving my stuff abroad
  • Entertainment(Notify steam, EA games etc that i am moving?)

What other things do i need to sort out and organise?

Also i am welcome to suggested places to research and possibly move.

I have outlined these places so far:

  • Amsterdam
  • Berlin
  • Frankfurt
  • Barcelona
  • Lisbon?
Thanks in advance

Have you visited these places for like at least a fortnight?

As above I have been to 4 of these places and they are very very different.

All of those places are so different, what reason are you looking to move?
Yes they are and i will be assesing which one is good for me to move to.

I wont dive into the reason why i am moving as it will easily derail this thread dramatically.

A decision is made and i am after advice from people who have taken the leap and jumped ship

Nearly half of those places i have spent a couple of weeks there but actually considering it as a place to work and live is a lot different then spending a couple of weeks on holiday/visiting friends/family there

Both Lisbon and Barcelona are the place mentioned and im actually going back to Barcelona visiting my cousin there in a few weeks time

... open an international bank account, spec-out/test an online international exchange company

.. prefer somewhere with a better/hot climate ? (or cold/ski)

Not a great choice if you're not earning local wages. Android developers don't generally get to charge more just because they live in an expensive country because software development has no borders.

Software development is currently in a race to the bottom here.

Yep, that's why I would never work there if my job was in programming. Found that out after the job interview I had a few weeks ago.

Germany seems to be a better option for me. Still aiming to be out the UK by the end of the year as my exams are now over :)

Go for it! That's why I am.

I'm currently looking to relocate to Vienna, though it isn't Brexit related or anything like that.

I would say that wherever you choose (your list is extremely random) do your research and do it thoroughly - housing market, specific restrictions, tax brackets, healthcare, specific rules and regulations, import restrictions..... don't go in half baked or you will regret it massively.

On the German side I'd remove Frankfurt from the list (it's an absolute dump) and swap it with Munich. Plenty of tech jobs there and well located for travel around the alps.
