Woman Blinded At Ryder Cup

I read this story earlier on today and it made me wince when I read explosion of the eyeball, ouch. I hope she does get the money for the medical bills.

Where do you suggest they stand, a mile or two away and behind ballistic glass shields?
why the stupid sarcasm? the obvious answer is they stand in a position where there is no - or the very minimal - chance of a stuffed shot shooting a ball at them. can't be that hard to work out from basic ballistics/trajectories.

Doesn't she live in Egypt? And free healthcare doesn't mean free everything... especially long term non-critical care.

Wasn't it ridiculously hot... even after warnings... to the extent it caused horrific scalding?

And the coffee was served purposely extremely hot simply to kick people out, serve more people and increase profits.

Turkish coffee tends to be served cooler (and is delicious) but that isn't really relevant either.

You clearly dont watch golf, the ball can literally go anywhere, and they cannot stand further back as they wouldn't be able to see the ball, and they would be moving in the way on another hole on many courses.

Sometimes sarcasm is the best riposte to forehead slapping statements.

The longest drive on record is 515 yards, let's assume the ball was in flight for 400 yards, are we to
have a crowd free safe zone of 400 yards depth each side of the fairway lest a ball goes awry, seriously ?

Certainly there are nets in some parts of Wimbledon and American Football grounds, but at ice hockey and baseball a spectator takes the chance of getting injured by an errant projectile.

Nets are used at some Ice Hockey rinks, mainly behind the goals, but you still have a chance of getting hit by a puck or even broken sticks along the sides where the plexi glass is not as high. Plus, at least at the Sheffield Steelers there are constant messages on the score board to always keep your eyes on the puck. They also try to limit people moving to/from their seats while the game is in progress because you're not keeping an eye on play.

I don't watch golf either but I can tell that the post about "predicting" where a wayward ball is going to go suggests a certain failure to understand physics - BAD STUFF SOMETIMES HAPPENS!

What I find even more perplexing is some of the chatterati's suggestions as to possible solutions, particularly in relation to the use of walkie talkies:
Pierre, there is a ball coming your way!
Répéter?

There is a ball coming your way!
You talkin' to me bud?
No, to PIERRE! There is a ball coming his way!
Parlez Français vous cochon Anglais! Oh, mon Dieu!

Bad stuff sometimes happens, Blame the celestial faerie.

To be honest, the fans shouldn't be standing that close, they should be forced to sign a waiver beforehand to ensure they accept the risks, it's not the event organisers fault, the venue or the players.

What it does highlight and something that is easily rectifiable from an H&S perspective, if Staff are standing around one of them could shout 'fore' down a megaphone when somebody has hit the ball with their bat.
Or they could hold up signs or something.
The other thing that bothers me is that other people saw the ball coming down (or might have seen) and it makes you wonder why somebody didn't throw an arm out (unless nobody was paying attention).
However, I'm not into this bat and ball game so don't know how fast this can happen but I've been at a cricket match where somebody hit the ball with their racket and I caught it in the seats.

Golf balls can reach speeds twice as fast as a cricket ball and the smaller surface area will result in more damage to boot.

Chances are you won't see it coming 300 yards away and it would probably sting quite a bit if you tried to catch one. :D

At the teeing off place [ is that the jargon ? ] the crowd are very close to the player driving that ball.

But again, one must take risks in life or else we just sit at home wrapped in bubblewrap.

I myself still bear the scar of that fateful day I agreed to a game of darts with my wee sister
who promptly lobbed a dart into me thigh missing my crown jewels by a whisker.

They have marshals or course marshal (whatever you want to call them) up and down every hole. They hold the "Quiet" signs, spot the ball in heavy rough etc... When a ball is called a "fore left or right" the player will use his club and also point it left or right to indicate which way the ball went. The marshal also does this with his quiet sign to indicate to the marshals further down the fairway which side the ball is coming towards.

I doubt a megaphone would work due to the fact it's louder and people could think it's on their hole when in fact it's behind them on another hole. I (try) to play golf and if you hear fore I'll put my arms over my head just to be sure. At the end of the day it's all down to paying attention given that a "fore" warning gives you around 4/5 seconds before it'll land.

Only one solution.

Ban live spectators of any sport... Or just say Tough, should have been paying attention its a golf course, crap happens when you hit a ball with a stick, here have some tickets for next year, sorry love.

Next.

As far as I'm aware, they were further back than normal. The commentators mentioned this during the tournament, commenting on how deep the rough was where normally it would have been trampled down.

Hot water does have that risk. It was between 82-88 C

If you pop into your local independent cafe you might well be able to order yourself a cup of tea served even hotter than that and without a lid on either.

She ordered it in the drive through but they then parked up anyway and she stuck it between her legs and removed the lid to add milk, of course a flexible/disposable cup contains hot water between your legs with the lid removed isn’t the best of ideas. Now they carry warning labels to tell people that the hot drunk they’ve ordered is indeed hot.
