What's a decent first car for a 22 year old? [Updated]

As already alluded to, look for some random choices and spend a few hours entering registrations into a comparison site, I know of a 19 year old girl who’s just changed her 206 for a Mondeo as the insurance was £350 cheaper on it despite it having a much bigger engine(!)

Agreed, I can insure a 750i V12 of the same age and mileage for less than my current 735i V8 and an e39 M5 for approximately £35 more despite it having nearly double the horsepower.

Absolutely bonkers.
I have managed to insure a focus ST for less than a 2.0TDI 60 plate skoda octavia at 19 years old
I'm not complaining

When I was 19 it was cheaper for me to get insured on an R8 V10 Plus than my Dads 2001 A6 1.9TDI. :p

Been finding insurance so up and down. I've found Quidco to give the cheapest quotes so far, which is strange as they offer cashback too.

Anyhow, found a really nice fiesta, £3.5K, 50K miles, nice body kit and only 1.1K on insurance :)

I think you should remove the 'only' - You make it sound like a bargain ;)

It does get cheaper though, I paid £1.3k first year on a 99 plate corsa at 17, £800 second year then when I turned 19 I got myself a 200bhp Volvo T4 for £1200 and paid £530 for that insurance wise, so comes down quick :)

"Nice body kit" worries me :p

Aha - just mean it's not the bland stock kit. It's the Zetec S kit, but on a standard Fiesta, so looks a little more sporty, without boy racer stripes etc :p

£1,100 is a bargain compared to what I've been looking at ;) A 1.6 Fiesta would cost me £1,560 on insurance without a courtesy card and breakdown cover, which the 1,100 has :)

1700 quid my first year of insurance was, at 18 on a 55hp 1.2 Polo. Yeowch. :p

Currently pay that to insure both of my cars combined, on specialist policies, with agreed value and mods covered etc, at 23.

Buy a car that old grandads drive and the insurance will be cheaper. Obviously it is more expensive on boy racer and "kid's first car" type cars as there is more recorded crashes and write offs in them.
