Women have been urged not to wear headphones or use mobile phones following a string of sexual assaults in north-west London. Is this a form of victim blaming or necessary advice in an imperfect world?

"I would appeal to women in the local area to take care when they are walking, especially if they are alone," said Det Con Laura Avery. "Always stick to well-lit streets. If possible, let someone know when you are coming home and the route you are taking and always be alert in your surroundings, so don't use earphones or handheld devices."

Jessica Eaton, who campaigns on behalf of the victims of sexual violence, called the advice "ridiculous" and "useless". "No-one will talk about the most common denominator here," she said. "Headphones don't rape women, nor do skirts, or dark streets, or clubs, or alcohol, or parties, or sleepovers, or school uniforms.

Similarly, headphones don't mow down jaywalkers.

The advice by Det Con Laura Avery whilst deeply depressing doesn't seem ridiculous or useless but reasoned and sensible to me in this day and age.

Nor do Somalian immagrants being deported on planes it seems....

hahah sorry!

Anyway that Jessica Eaton is just retarded.

Dark streets? Of course they don't tape people that's an absurdity. Its about opportunity. And reducing the opportunustic rapists opportinity.

The point is that dark streets increase opportunity, of course the street itselft doesn't rape anyone. Can't believe the absurd argument.

Back when I was 12 all they ever used to say in PSHE was be careful in dark alleys..... Therefore this current propaganda is simply trying to get girls to be less vigilant and care less about surroundings. Maybe there are forces out there trying to increase opportunities for rapists.

It's no different than recommending the likes of cyclists to not wear headphones whilst cycling. Up to the person if they do but you take that risk when you do that you will not be as aware of your surroundings compared to if you didn't wear them. It's not rocket science. It isn't ridiculous or useless information unless your dumb and have zero common sense.

The fact is as even doing what is requested, naming the perpetrators and the problem etc, will not solve anything either. I'm unsure why they think it will. Fact is the world has people on it that'll commit these horrid acts regardless of whatever is said / done. It isn't about victim blaming bla bla bla, people are so blinkered and naive themselves if they think things like this can be 100% prevented. As stated at the end of the article, Utopia does not exist! So a person's best chance is to mitigate the risk. Their logic is simply flawed.

CONSPIRACY LEVEL OOOOOOONE MILLLLLLLLLLLION!

If I'm walking around in the middle of the night I don't tend to keep my headphones in either because I'm not a complete moron and like to know what's going on around me and I'm very much not a rape target apart from the boobs.

Same here. Late at night I keep my phone in my pocket and my headphones out of my ears because I don't want to be a victim of a mugging.

"The suspect is described as a black man, of medium build, aged in his 20-30s and wearing dark clothing."

Wow, can't be many people in London that fit that description.

Well it isn't me for one :p

Not wearing headphones while wandering home in the dark is pretty sensible and I can't believe people need telling, female or otherwise

All they really need to do is tell people to keep their wits about them and then not wearing headphones is common sense, it's sad that the nanny state has to go into specifics.

I read a story a while back about some girl who had been out clubbing, woke up with a broken jaw and had been raped. The last thing she remembered was walking home drunk. Moral of the story, don't walk around alone in a daydream (or drunk) and be aware of your surroundings at all times, particularly at night. The argument about victim blaming is pretty counter-productive when it comes to womens safety and is just part of the radical lefts current crusade against men.

I had to ask one of my more hardline feminist friends about this because I see police give out advice like this all the time. The article mentions that it doesn't happen with other crimes but around here there's posters everywhere telling people not to use phones near curbs, one of the local train stations has notices about moped thieves, every concert I go to nowadays has a pickpocketing notice, motorbike parking spaces have spray painted advice on the ground etc etc. Her response was along the lines of 'they should be spending their time and effort educating men and telling them not to rape'. Whilst I agree with the sentiment, repeat offenders like this guy won't magically decide to stop because there's more pressure in society to do so.

If they know **** is going down in the area why not put more police there?

Lack of resources is what we got told when we asked why they don't station officers where there's blatant drug dealing, a couple officers in a problem area is taking away staff from another problem area.

More police where? North West London is a massive area lmao. And still, presence of police will only deter an assault at that particular moment in time, it also simply defers it until they are out of sight! For "more police" to be able to deter all assaults for a longer periods of time they would have to be posted on every single road and constantly watching absolutely everything.
