The HMD Nokia 7+ is really the closet thing there is to a successor to Googles Nexus lineup. Stock Android/Android One (guaranteed software updates for two years) USC C connection, very good battery life, 660 Snapdragon chipset (if that's important to you), all metal stylish unibody construction and can be had for about £250.

I was going to the Chinese route (Honor/One Plus etc) but I was put off by how slowly users were saying updates were rolled out and the lack of USB type C on the handsets I was considering (this may seem like a small thing but after having a device with it I don't want to go back to micro USB ever again).

This is another thing that used to matter to me, but over the years I've found the updates don't generally add much and they often seem to negatively affect battery life or other features. Nexus/Pixel devices in particular feel like beta test beds and the updates often had bugs with Bluetooth and the camera etc.

Obviously security updates are good to have but big revisions of Android have become less appealing to me. What was the last big addition that you really noticed, notch support?

USB-C is preferable to micro USB but it makes no difference at all to me having the older port.
