Guys,

I game, but not much, at 2560x1080p and need to update my GFx.

Currently there are really good prices on the 570 8gb. Does the extra £50-£80 make that much difference in going to the 580 in the real world?

Anyway here's a comparison:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SukjHCEWf_U (4gb 580 but I doubt it gives any boost)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DFyDuykQkA&t=261s (4gb 570)

I'm having the same quandary OP except I'm wondering when will the 570 4gb come down. Because if they can do a 8gb version for £160 surely a 4gb deal for £130 is around the corner. I doubt it ever makes use of more than 4gb although maybe at higher resolutions it will. But I'm only going to play at 1080p

Still I'd imagine you'd get a better performance with a 4gb 580, which can be had for £180 if you look.

Isn't 480 the equivilent of 580? But the 580 is overclocked more or something

Yes, in a way. Performance wise, you'll get 10%ish more from a 580 than a 480, either at stock because it clocks higher from factory, or OC because it can OC higher more reliably than a 480. E.g. my XFX GTR 480 can only do 1350mhz on core & 2125 mhz on memory, which is closer to stock speed on 580s for core. I see 580s can also more easily achieve 2250 on memory, which is great because these cards really desire more bandwidth.

Imo I wouldn't get 4gb even at 1080p. Vram is so cheap and so useful, you'd be shooting yourself in the foot for a measly savings. Certain games are also very prone to eating a lot of vram, e.g. Black Ops, FFXV, Forza H 5, SotTR etc. As for deals, I don't think so, Gibbo is saying they're already selling these at close to break-even or a loss. Thing about vram is, if you need even a little more it makes all the difference in the world to have it. Would absolutely not recommend anyone go for the lower vram cards unless you simply can't spare the extra £ at all.

Regarding Vram, this is kind of interesting video. Essentially a 4gb 680 GTX doesn't get any extra performance over a 2gb 680 GTX, which seemingly gets away with using system ram:

In another video by the same guy he states the 2gb has some texture quality issues despite maintaining the frame rate

So given the 680 doesn't make much use of more than 2gb, will the 570 ever make use of more than 4gb? Or will it be always too slow to make use of it?

I'm all for getting more VRAM for the future if it helps but if it doesn't then is it better to go for a £180 580?

You can't really compare apples to oranges though. 2/4gb 680 gtx to 4/8gb rx 4(or5) 70/80.

Vastly different architecture.

Going back to the 480/580 they are very similar.. The 580 is such a small improvement over the 480 that a factory OC 480 is as good or marginally better than a stock 580.

The additional 4gb will help with the 8gb cards given you're running ultra wide 1080p.
580 8 gb is ideal but if the 570 8gb is significantly discounted it could be worth the saving.

The difference at regular 1080p is not huge but it is notable, it might be a bigger hit at ultra wide 1080 resolution.. Not many benchmarks comparing ultra wide to standard aspect ratio though.

The MSI 570 8gb can be got for a £50-70 discount against the current MSI 580 8gb which OCUK have on TWO @ £230 (best UK price i think)' not quite 2/3 of the price, but close

That's certainly a good deal.
I guess the question is still the same, is the 570 8gb going to be able to push the extra pixels on an ultra wide 1080 screen as good as the 580.. I did do a bit of a search but it's hard to find benchmarks for that card and resolution.

I'd maybe look at bench marks for the cards at 1080 and 1440 and figure you'll be somewhere in between in terms of FPS

Also you say you don't game 'much' .
If that means you don't mind running medium or high as opposed to ultra high settings, maybe the 570 is the way to go..

We have on weekly offer-
MSI 580 8GB Armor at £229.99
MSI 570 8GB Armor at £179.99

Both are really good prices!

Exactly Gibbo, it's trying to decide if that extra £50 is really worth it.

In terms of how much I game. I play single player, no comp multiplayer, but have a family and don't get a lot of time to game.

I have a large back catalogue on Steam from Humble bundles and things so my library is far from cutting edge. Having just been forced to get a new monitor I know my ancient 460ti won't push pixels around Ultrawide at a decent frame rate much longer.

I have gone freesync so want AMD and just as well buy while there is a big games bundle on offer. They will be my newest games by far. I
