Hey Peeps,

I've been asked to have a look at a laptop to upgrade/repair. Needs an extra 8gb ram and a larger m2 installed. Also user complains of viruses etc so will need to most likely OS reinstall, reinstall apps, copy old data across etc

Been a while since I've done this for anyone outside my social circle so how much would you charge (parts to be bought separately)?

Molesy :D

$1,000 and then when it goes wrong or they need 'customer support', it is someone else's problem.

e: for clarity, your bill is $1k so they go elsewhere and then someone else's ****show to deal with because it will be.

I understand what you are saying but I'll be fine. Just looking for advice on price.

Work out how much you believe is a reasonable rate for your time per hour, then guess how many hours this is likely to take and multiply the two.

Take some off if this is mates rates.

The last 'foreigner' laptop job i did i reinstalled the OS and upgraded to an SSD and i charged the price of the parts and £50 labor (£120 in total), i figured £20 an hour and took me maybe 2.5 hours of doing stuff in total with ordering the parts, taking the thing apart and then installing the OS.

No idea if that's any kind of going rate as i do it along side my normal IT job for people i vaguely know.

Price up components required, then how long it's going to take multiplied by an hourly wage you'd be happy to set yourself (taking into account overheads).

I used to do jobs like this on the cheap all the time but it become too much of a hassle after a while, you end up getting lumbered with loads of jobs that arrive with a simple problem but often require a lot more time an effort than you initially think is required, now if someone asks me to fix or upgrade a system I give a more ''normal' quote, for the job you have I would charge about £80 labour plus parts.

yeah I've had this problem in the past as well so not really done it for a while but money is tight so I don't mind doing the occasional thing now. I was thinking £80 as well so maybe that's a good price for what will be a good 2-3 hours work.

Thanks for the advice, think I'll go for £80
