SSD vs microSDXC for Surface Pro 6

Hi guys,

I'm considering the new Surface Pro 6, but am trying to figure out whether to buy the 256gb model or the 128gb model plus a micro SD card. Ideally I would like more than 128gb internal storage, but my thinking is:

Surface Pro 6 with 256gb SSD = £1,150
Surface Pro 6 with 128gb SSD = £880
128gb microSDXC memory card = £23

Would there be any significant benefits to buying the 256gb model? I get that SSDs are quicker etc. but surely this doesn't justify an extra £250?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That's a big price rise. Unfortunately you may one day decide 128GB isn't enough for system files, and I think the Surface devices aren't easy to open. Might even be a soldered SSD if they're jerks.

That said, if you separate files well and keep non-critical files on the SD it can work well. Just consider the chances that 128GB will be enough. My laptop for work is 240, I usually keep it around 45-55% full but I imagine a chunk of that is files I could put in slow storage.

Thanks Benski!

My thinking was along the same lines. Even if I got a 256gb SD card (or 400gb+), it would come out significantly cheaper and would offer more storage space for the non-critical files as you say.

120gb is plenty for OS, a good suite of apps apps and maybe one game. Or many small games.

End of the day it's a laptop not a workstation. And if you want gigabytes of media storage then you can simply buy a suitably sized memory card or external drive..

I'd go with the 128gb all day long considering the price difference.
Considering a 240gb SSD is currently about £35, it's a complete rip off for it to be £250 more expensive.

Thanks a lot guys! I'm gonna go with the 128gb model, throw in an SD card and make use of Cloud storage :)

FWIW the Pro 5 (is there even a 6 yet? Ahh there is I see, you can guarantee that the ssd is soldered - taking all the worst design choices from the mac :)) has a soldered SSD. Last surface with a replaceable one was the 4. They are also not nearly as hard to repair as most places tell you :)

Personally I would go 256 and add the extra but then that is just me. My suite of apps, dev tools etc would eat 128 before I have even begun :(
