Apple Event - 30th October - 2pm - "There's more in the making"

apple display please :)

8k displays and new mac pros inbound.

Can't see new Apple displays happening, they're pretty much out of that game now - hence why they partner with LG for the ultrafines. The ultrafines only work with Macs at the moment (from what I believe) or TB3 so that's pretty much the new TB Display.

As for a Mac Pro, earliest next year I would say, they are redesigning from scratch aren't they? I think there would have been more leaks if it was coming this soon.

The iPad Pros are rumoured to be having USB-C port(s) instead of Lightning. Wonder if this is the start of Apple knocking that interface on the head for iPhones, too.

It's possible but I think the move to USB-C is more about charging than anything else. You can put 65W+ through a type C, I don't think you can do that with a lightning.

I imagine made for iPhone is slowly declining as everything goes wireless.

Apple said last year when they did that roundtable thing that they'd be making displays to go with the new Mac Pros.

Apple's head of marketing Phil Schiller said: "As part of doing a new Mac Pro — it is, by definition, a modular system — we will be doing a pro display as well."

The LG was plagued with issues on release - don't know if it's improved since then.

I don't remember that, great news if that's the case then. I still wouldn't expect a new Mac Pro or screen this year, but would absolutely love to be wrong here. I'm one of those, I don't need a proper professional machine, the 13" mBP is more than enough for me (in all honesty the air is too) but I would love to get my hands on whatever they come up with.

I'd imagine it won't be cheap! I'd ideally like to replace my 2012 Mac Mini with a MBP + 5K display for flexibility more than anything else, but I'd wager that will cost a lot more than just a regular 5K iMac.

Haha, nothing comes cheap with Apple. I was seriously considering going 5k, but I am on a Bezel dislike at the moment, and the ultrafine has huge bezels. So I have gone 2018 mBP with 4K USB C monitor. I'll definitely be getting a brand new Mini if they release.

Yeah I don't like how the LG looks either. The 5K iMac screen is just so. good. though and I can't bring myself to get a poverty 4K monitor when I upgrade next. :D

So is it still gonna be the same ppi? Bigger screen size but same ppi? (for new ipad)

I think they may be like the iPhone X where you had something similar to an 6/7/8 Plus screen but without the heft around it, so same screen size and res but less bezel due to a lack of home button (and no notch because what bezel there is suffices to house the Face ID sensors). Not long to find out though...

That would make a bit pointless for me to upgrade from 10.5 pro. I don't mind slightly bigger bezels, but addition of home button might be better, there is also more functionality with headphone jack.

Bigger size with higher res might push me but it looks like that's not happening

It's a real long shot but if they do make a more capable Mac Mini, I will definitely be interested. There's a few rumours of a more 'pro' Mac Mini, which is something I think a lot of people want. Including me. But those people have always been interested and they've never delivered before so I'm not very hopeful they will this time.

Regardless... fingers crossed.

Hopefully updates to the iMac and MacBook Air. Surely they can’t allow the latter to continue any longer?
From what I understand, after speaking with one of the Genius' at my local Apple Store, the MBA is still the highest selling laptop. I expressed surprise and her answer was simple: "Students".

It's been a good couple of years since I was selling Macs, but yes. People love them for some reason and it can be really hard to upsell them to something that's genuinely considerably better.

That said, my work-issued laptop for running the shop was an MBA and I loved it.Technically speaking it was a bit crap but it was a joy to actually use day to day. This was before the new Macbooks came out though.

In all honesty all I feel the MBAs need are an improved screen, and maybe make them a bit lighter than they are - as they're fantastic machines that do what 85% of people need. Only sold my 2013 version this year, and it was still fit for purpose, apart from the fact I wanted a shiny new modern USB C thingy.

I'm happy for them to keep the CPU a mobile based one, so it stays nice and thin, but I would like to see it upgraded to an 8750H, or perhaps one of the intel CPUs with built in Vega?

Using a macbook air after having one of the new pros feels awful. Low res screen, touchpad is awful and the keyboard feels super chunky. That being said, plenty of people like that keyboard and they are considerably cheaper that most other macs and they are sturdy little machines.

I would wager that they might update the screen, touchpad and perhaps the form factor and keep the price point in the new ones.

Apple will almost certainly move the iPhone to usb-c once the iPad moves to it. Otherwise the only thing left on lightning would be the iPhone, their "flagship" main product which doesn't make sense.

It will be interesting to see what apple do with their screens as the LG Ultrafines are lovely displays if a little pricey and very apple focussed. The fact that I can plug 2 cables into my macbook pro and have my entire workstation, 2 4 monitors and power delivery is fantastic. The 4K ones don't have the asymmetrical bezels as well. Personally I like the plain black design of them and the bezels are fine but I know plenty don't like them.
