Stay classy, Indonesia.

Women looking to become police officers in Indonesia are reported to have to undergo an invasive "two-finger" virginity test and be "pretty" as a part of the recruitment process.

Despite the tests not being recorded or on the books as an official requirement, it is still conducted throughout the country under the guise of a "morality or physical examination".

...The test is conducted by inserting two fingers into the vagina to see if the woman's hymen is still intact — a method which has long been criticised as invasive while also not being able to accurately determine a woman's virginity either.

Good to see that Islam has had such a positive effect on their culture. Oh wait...

Is there like a forced narrative plaguing this sub forum or something, because although it's relevant to western ethical concerns, it's not amazingly relevant overall, i mean i don't see a thread every day for rape statistics in Delhi, violence in Nairobi or whatever.

Why is this story different?

It's so incredibly sad and i'm not talking about the story.

this is the sort of thing 'feminists' should be protesting, not what tissues are called.

Don't you know western nations are the most sexist and oppressive towards women nations on Earth, our patriachy is so out of control that wolf whistling is now a crime.

It raises a curious question - if they're happy to have it done, is it sexual assault?

I suspect the expectation is that if they don't have it done/refuse then their career is going to be awfully short. Just because they consent to do it, doesn't mean they aren't consenting under duress which really isn't consent is it?

But it's not the only career out there. In the grand scheme of things of effort/risk vs reward it's a pretty poor choice but with the entry requirements you'd assume the applicant is qualified for a number of other careers.

If i said to you; "right, Ahleckz, you want to be a butcher eh? Well OK you can be one but you need to fondle my giblets every Tuesday. Or you can be a baker and there's no giblet fondling involved". What would you do?

I believe there’s a few female Silvers in the Met that already select new female team members using a variant of this test where the passing criteria is that the tester can go wrist-deep without using lube.

I think you are over estimating the amount of well paid careers that young women can feasibly break into in Indonesia. According to the Jakarta Post, the average salary for the lowest ranking police officer (unfortunately, I imagine the vast majority of women police are low ranking) is $116.90 USD per month. Having these jobs available and open to them is literally a lifeline for many of these people and they shouldn't have to be subjected to sexual assault to get them.

It's more of a case of, "Right Dis, you want to earn more than you can anywhere else and try and bring yourself and family out of abject poverty? Right, take your pants off and let me fondle you. Don't like it? Enjoy your poverty". What would you do?

I think you're massively over-estimating the amount of women in Indonesia who want to be police women and who have no other option.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/24130639_The_Male-Female_Wage_Differentials_in_Indonesia is an interesting one as it shows even 20 years ago women's average earnings in Indonesia were approaching males very rapidly, there's no reason to suggest that this trend hasn't continued.

The average police salary there is also on the low side with the average country-wide being around 300 dollars a month. So to say there aren't other low paid jobs out there and they have no choice but to live in abject poverty is a bit disingenuous especially given the fact the country has an employment rate of over 95%! A rate higher of employment than not only Spain, Italy and France but the EU as a whole.

I think we're getting quite off topic here and ignoring the really issue - women are being sexually assaulted in order to get a job. Do you really believe the women are happy to be 'tested' in this way or do you think it could be an abuse of power by their superiors?

The abstract of your study says:
it is also shown that women already in the labour market are `selected' individuals who are lucky enough to experience less discrimination.
This suggests that the authors feel that discrimination is a major issue within the country (as it is throughout most of the World), and reaffirms my argument that the actions these women are subject to are a form of discrimination (and also sexual assault). I doubt the men are getting checked in quite the same way are they?

Agree with both of your points but I still stand by my point that sometimes some women are happy to go along with completely inappropriate behaviour by a man/men to get something they desire. In those instances they are propagating that inappropriate behaviour.
