New AMD GPU into an i5 3570K @ 4.40GHz rig?

Hello,

I've been out the game for too long so I don't know about current GPUs but I was considering buying a new monitor, probably an ASUS MG279Q (27", 1440p, 144Hz, Freesync, IPS) and wondered if I could just slot in a new GPU to my current rig?

Antec 300
i5 3570K @ 4.40GHz
MSI 7950
Z77-D3H
K2
8GB Samsung Green
Intel 335 180GB
Seagate 500GB
RM650

If it helps narrow things down I'd prefer quieter fans on a card where possible.

Thanks!

The 8gb 570 and 8gb 580's would be a nice upgrade over the 7950 and have been going pretty cheap lately, also they include 3 games.

The 570's have been going for around £170

The 580's have been going for about £220 link below.

You would have to check reviews to see how loud they are but most models should be pretty quiet they don't use much power.

If you want something faster the vega 56 is £350 right now and a good price if it's in budget.

If you're bothered about that sort of thing I guess, I sue a FreeSync monitor on GTX1070, runs at 75Hz still, seems fine to me.

Any thoughts on what to slot in though?

Cheers! Food for thought! I generally play FPS. I guess there should be no issues with either of these options fitting in my case? Would a Vega 56 be overkill for my CPU?

Your case looks pretty big but to make sure you can always measure the length from the back of the case to the drive bays then check against the card specs.

In the past on my old case I had to cut the top hdd bay out to make room for a longer card so it is worth checking.

Also it depends what shooters you are playing if it's something like overwatch then the 570/580 would be great.

If your playing more demanding games like battlefield and want to play max settings then the Vega might be the better choice for you .

On more demanding games like battlefield your 4 core/4 thread cpu will become a bit of an issue and give you low minimums. You could always swap this out for a second hand 3770k for a cheapish upgrade.

The AMD card and freesync monitor offers great value right now.

There is some good 1070ti prices but like you say gsync monitors are normally a lot more money.

Not at all, in fact I'd say it's the perfect card for the monitor you're looking at and right now you can find a smashing deal on one for £350 here at OCUK. I really don't see a better deal/combo than that V56 + Freesync monitor.

Just posted this in the monitor section, I'm thinking Vega 56 would be a better decision too. I'd rather it last me for another 6 years versus cheaping out upfront. Just need to decide on the monitor I think, the ASUS MG279Q is a bit old but I can't see any other viable options that are 27", 1440p, 144Hz, Freesync, IPS.

I've just gone from a 1070ti X34A to a Vega 64 and the MG279Q and I'm loving it! I wanted something smaller monitor wise and I wanted to try a Vega out.

If you're interested in keeping the card that long then definitely look into undervolting. Vega thrives with that. For the monitor, yeah for IPS there's few options, but note that Freesync doesn't work above 90hz on that monitor. ACER XF270HUA has a better range (40-144).

Why undervolt? To keep it running cooler for longer? Quieter fans? Less pull on the PSU? Will Overclockers rename their site to underclockers? :D

Would you say a particular Vega 56 is better than others (ignoring current OC price chop)? Scanning over lots of Reddit's suggests maybe the Sapphire Nitro and Powercolor Red Dragon are preferred? Asus not so much and Gigabyte definitely not. MSI and Asrock someone mentioned, "due to sticking with a reference blower/PCB are really good if you want to add the card to a custom water loop."

Someone else mentioned:
"LC > Sapphire Nitro+ > Powercolor Red Devil > Asus Strix> Gigabyte Gaming OC > MSI Air Boost > Reference"

Yeah I've read I can hack the monitor to 54-144 (or something like that) if I wanted to get Freesync over that range, maybe in time, not sure I'd personally see a difference.

I'd be amazed if the 4C/4T ivybridge doesn't bottleneck anything above a 1060/580 if you are targeting 60fps.

Games like shadow of the tomb raider or the two new AC games just hammer the cpu.

Will probably need to update the boards BIOS to get a newer card working too.
Good shout, I didn't think about that. Forgive my n00bness but are you thinking F23b from here?

I only ask as it's last updated 2014 so not sure if this might be right.

Well I suppose I was looking for something around 144FPS with the new shiny 144Hz screen :D In all seriousness I guess 80-100. The games I play aren't new though, from a few years ago.

So eat burgers and get thinner, check!

I never had a vega so don't know exactly how it works but they will tell you in the owners thread.

I think basically at stock they have a bit too much voltage so end up hitting the limits and throttling.

If you undervolt them you can push them harder and throttle less.

Basically all of those. Usually what kills a GPU in the long run is overvolting, which unfortunately the Vegas do out of the box. Luckily in Vega's case undervolting is nothing but upside (for clocks, for heat, for noise, for longevity & for power consumption). As for the particular card, yeah I'd say that's the correct order, though it doesn't matter since the selection at good prices is basically just the Red Dragon, which will do well.
