2070 or 1080

Hi, I have been asked by a friend who is looking to upgrade his aging GTX680 he wants to know what would be the best between the 1080 and the 2070, he's said he's not bothered about ray tracing and just wants to know what would be the best upgrade. He is a pure gamer so he wants the decision to be on that. He has a 6700k with 16GB ram and a 2540x1440 display. Thanks Chaps.

Is he the kind of person that upgrades rarely (given that he still has a GTX 680)?

I'd be looking at a new 2070 (evga 2070 black £460) or a used 1080 Ti (£450). The latter has no warranty but performs a lot better.

A new 1080 at £400+ isn't worth it imo. A used one at <£350 is value for money, but has the problem of no warranty and less performance.

Yep doesn't upgrade very often, he'll use the same tech for years and only thinks about new stuff when he feels his kit is not performing how he'd like. Good call for the second hand 1080ti although he has stated he wants new. My intention is to show him what the pros on here say so he can then make his own mind up. Second 1080ti for about £450 or less is what I've suggested too.

If it's a 60Hz display then a 1070, 1070Ti, 100Hz display 1080 or 2070 or Vega64. 144Hz or higher then a 1080ti (or 2080Ti).

The lower end cards there won't last 3 years.

It's the asus rog swift monitor, I think 144hz one, he hasn't had it that long.

I definitely be looking at a 1080Ti in that case.

The 2070 is strictly better than the 1080 so unless you find one for cheap, it's a clear choice for the 2070. Not much better mind you but knowing how Nvidia's optimizations go I'd certainly expect it to be comfortably ahead of the 1080 in every future game.

2070 no doubt about it, seeing as his last GPU is the GTX680, he obviously intends to keep it a while, so you certainly don't start out with the slower already out of date tech that is the 1080.

If it has to be new and a 2070 or 1080 then i would say 2070.

But imo he would do better with a used 1080 ti in the long run based on what you've said.

Funny enough 1080ti is clearly the best answer. What horrible people giving good advice.

The 2070 is unlikely to be a strong 1440p card for years to come if you are targetting high frame rates.

As a 1080ti is about £600 no it's not- a lot of us don't want used gpu's, @bru is spot on, 2070>1080 going forward.

2070, but dude the 1080ti second hand would make way more sense, more vram, faster speeds esp once overclocked and ability to be SLI down the line.

If he has gsync monitor, used Gtx1080ti, of the good ones. Aorus Xtreme or Gaming, EVGA FTW3, MSI lightning.

To answer your question, the cheapest 2070 you can find.

But if it was me with that monitor, I would be looking at a 2nd hand 1080ti.

The down side of having an expensive monitor is your better of having an expensive GPU to get the most of it
