Morning all,

The other half is looking at buying a car - for licence reasons it needs to be auto (she's Canadian, so her licence will be an auto only unless she retakes her test and she has no desire to).

Currently looking at Focii, around MY2009. What are the auto boxes like on them? I've been CVT in some descriptions, are they all CVT at that age? Anything to avoid?

TIA :)

I believe on the mk2 your options are an old-school (but as far as I know pretty reliable) 4 speed slushbox for things like the 1.6 petrol, or the Powershift (twin-clutch DSG-style) for the higher-powered diesels.

Looking at a small range, including the 1.6 petrol and perhaps the 2.0 TDCi - I'm assuming it'll be the older CVT for both of those?

I didn't think the Focus of that age came with a CVT at all? I was only aware of the torque converter type and the powershift dual clutch as Howard says

I've seen a few ads with CVT in the description, wasn't sure whether it was just the seller getting confused.

I'm assuming that the torque converter type is the usual affair, saps some power and has an impact on economy, but overall reasonably reliable?

I have a 2010 reg Focus 2.0 TDCI powershift - I think it's same build as 2008 Focus and so far not had any problems with it - I did have oil changed at 36k - now on 66k - I like the Powershift just as much as my old Mazda slushbox but Mazda had more power. I think it was the old dry clutch that had problems not oil filled ones.
