Hey all,

What is the general conscious on these cars, it seems like the 4.2 is at a good price for a low mileage car. I have read / heard things about horrendous bills on these cars before, but am curious as to how true that holds?

IE: How do these compare to the premium German marques in terms of repair costs and reliability?

This would be more of a comfortable weekend GT, cruiser, and not a daily. I think I would be happy with the 4.2 performance compared to the 4.7, provided it still sounds good!

Thanks!

Sure we had someone on here buy one. I criticised the 4.2. Got told to do one. He only kept it for a few months because he didn't get on with the engine.

Mate if mine has a 4.7 and I’ve spent a lot of time running with it on 2 Nurburgring trips and a couple of rides too. Lovely thing and a great GT car that even makes my V10 sound average. When pushing on my R8 is quite a bit quicker and certainly better on track, but as a continent crossing GT car the Massa is lovely and it has a cachet to it being rare and beautiful to behold and really nice to be in.

My sons friends dad had one, kept it for less than a year as his claimed it was costing a fortune to run? Have no more info beyond that I'm afraid.

I used to drive a Grancabrio for work, which I believe has the same engine. Wonderful GT car and one of the best cars I've ever driven. The interior feels and looks a bit cheap in some areas, and it felt somewhat heavy in the corners, but overall an absolutely fantastic car that I'd happily own myself.

My boss picked one up earlier this year - unsure if it's the 4.2 or 4.7 though; let's just say everyone will know if he's sneaking out of the office early now... they sound absolutely fantastic.

I think the 4.7 is much the louder car but as said, they sound out of this world good.

7:40 for noise

I've seen and heard one in the flesh. Absolutely gob-smackingly gorgeous and what a noise! Real presence on the road too. I was toying with the idea of saving a bit more for one over my first choice (XFR) but the potentially crippling running costs put me off. I went with the Jag in the end but would get a Granturismo in a heart beat if I could afford to run one

Apparently they are almost as expensive to maintain as Ferraris :p

The problem with cars like this is even though they depreciate loads, the parts costs don't. You'll come across loads of older ones that needs £1000s of spending on them imminently, just for normal wear and tear things like brakes and clutches and the owners trying to offload them asap.

Indeed - my brother in law nearly bought one recently after trying a friends, but, after having discussions on his running costs decided against it even though he can comfortably afford to run one.

His friend now drives a Ferrari because whilst sharing similarities to the Maserati in terms of running costs its offset by negligible by comparison depreciation.

my dad had a 4200GT, so older but I think the same 4.2 engine. every service was at least £1k + as something else (or more) needed fixing on top of usual service stuff - mostly electrics from memory - electric seat, sat nav, air con.

sounded great and nice to drive, but it cost on the unkeep.

I loved the old 3200/4200GTs and went looking at GranSports when it was time to upgrade from the M3 I had at the time. I couldn't get my head around the potential for huge servicing bills. I actually went to an RS6 and then quickly to an M5 instead. I spent serious amounts of money on both for parts and servicing, but I still think the Maser would have been even more.

Lovely cars but just too darn expensive to run.
