Is it possible to use Mozilla Thunderbird to read and download Gmail, Hotmail & Yahoo mail messages and also to delete them from the relevant mail servers?

And . . . if so, how does one set it up?

Incidentally, I have no real interest in using Thunderbird actually to SEND emails via those servers.

Gmail certainly works since that's what I do and I imagine the others will allow it to. You will need to set up the accounts in Thunderbird which should automatically detect the account types and input the correct server information, beyond that you need to check your IMAP or POP settings in each account so as it removes them from the server.

Thanks for that Stoner81.

Would you mind / be able to clarify a bit please?

Particularly, how I would "set up the accounts in Thunderbird" and what do you mean by checking my "IMAP or POP settings in each account so as it removes them from the server". Incidentally, many years ago I used to use Thunderbird to receive and send email from and via "other" mail servers - sadly this was quite some time ago and not with Gmail/Hotmail/Yahoo :(

I just used a guide like this https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-gmail
the only caveats are that you need to configure google to accept the less secure access mechanism thunderbird uses,
this is also in older threads on OC, discussing this

BUT you will end up with three discete mboxes inside thunderbird, each which grab the email from the services,
if you want amalgamate them in one folder(with right timeline) you'll have to copy the emails across to a local email folder, and set it to delete from server.

Once Thunderbird is installed you add your accounts to it, the app detects your mail account and pulls the needed settings from the database so it just works :) as for IMAP and POP3 you will need to login to your gmail accounts directly and check the settings in there.

PS - Sorry for the late reply.
