I7-3770k outdated for gaming?

I was under the impression that CPU mattered less at 4k compared lower res, but what XxX is saying is the opposite??

both of you are correct, although lots of GPU grunt is required for 4k, the CPU needs to be sufficiently fast to keep the GPU fed.
ie, a celeron paired with a 2080ti won't give a nice gaming experience at 4k.

though if i had to pick one of you to be correct, you're probably more correct than xxx is. the GPU matters slightly more :)
(an oc-ed) 3770k can just about keep up at 4k, but the 980 won't deliver a consistent 60fps without turning the settings down

wow. that's just bad advice.
4930 and 4960x are based on a totally different platform (ivy bridge-e)

@Nathanperry shame that you don't have a z77 board, else that 3770k will lend itself to overclocking (to stave off the inevitable upgrade further down the line)
personally, i'm running my 3770k (@4.4ghz) with a 1080ti.

the 3770k although long in the tooth, still has some life yet.
my (and by extension, your) next upgrade will have to be a full system overhaul, ie cpu+board+ram, unfortunately.
ddr4 memory is expected to be superceeded by ddr5 in the next 12-18 months

i do wonder whether is worth to wait out, and only upgrade if absolutely needed.
of course, if you are absolutely desperate to upgrade and have the spare cash lying about, then by all means :p
According to intel arc it works...

I had a fury x with a phenom 2 955..

Everyone lolled n thought i was crazy.....
But in 4k... my fury x was the bottleneck...
Not the cpu from 2009....

4k is gpu heavy... butttt thats with settings maxed.....

Next gpu gen... it should start becoming cpu sided again

Ocd 3770k is enoughhh....

I had a 2500k at 4.9ghz on a hyper 212 evo and that ran the fury x and rx 580 fine...

Lol thats what i said..
In 4k. Its gpu heavy

Pretty sure you need to go to specsavers. :D
4930/4960x is socket 2011, 3770k is socket 1155

Yeah I reread the thread, you and willhub got a bit confusing :p . Basically yeah, at 4k With a sufficiently decent CPU with all the settings turned up, the GPU would be the bottleneck

I hope I don't get an upgrade itch in the next year since I'm all about the laptop now, ain't no 400 quid more like 1400 :(

60fps and 1080p you don't need anything really. If you want at any time more than 60fps you need a new platform but 3770k will be fine for 2 more processor generations easily if you are only doing 60fps. I take it you can still run everything at 1080 60 with that setup.

If you decide to upgrade have a hunt for a good second hand deal. I’ve got a 4790k and cheap mATX motherboard going up on the MM shortly (which I appreciate you can’t access).

Skylake and Kabylake with the right board. 7700k even.

Not true its DDR3L skylake supports, not ddr3.... the voltages are totally different 1.35(ddr3l) vs 1.5(ddr3)

Edit: infact intel advise that ddr3 will damage the IMC in skylake over time if used with ddr3 and not the supported ddr3l

Not supported, but full speed and voltage DDR3 will work. There are plenty of boards that will accept normal DDR3.

I've never heard of anyone burning out their IMC and I personally would dismiss that as scaremongering.

Also, fun fact, Those who have modded 100 series boards to work with coffee lake cpus report that DDR3 is working with those too.
