Good going humanity....good ******* going.

In just 50 years we've managed to wipe out 60% of wildlife on the planet. A level of loss only seen previously in mass extinction events such as asteroid impacts or megavolcano eruptions.

We really need to change but sadly most people just don't give a crap.

Story isn't even top 10 on BBC news whilst knowledge that Adele is the richest UK celeb aged 30 or under is. We need a plague.

We really are a scourge on the planet, trouble is to change this we would have to drastically change our lifestyles and it is simply not going to happen. Eventually things will get so bad, extreme famine will cause war and we will thin ourselves out.

Hopefully it will happen before we wipe out too many more species.
Its something I can even see here. I live now about 200m from where I grew up as a kid. We used to have rabbits and hedgehogs everywhere. Loads of toads and needs when it was wet. We even had deer walking past on a few occasions. Now - nothing. I've seen 1 hedgehog in the past 4 years. Rabbits are all gone. No deer. No amphibians.

This summer a thing that I noticed quite a lot was a huge drop in roadkill. Surely that in itself is indicative of a drop in wildlife populations.

I guess its just the natural progression of things. Their time is up im afraid. If i have to choose between my little lad and a 100 Lions dying i would choose my lad every time and so would you in regards to the people you hold close.

but we shouldn't have to choose between your little lad and 100 lions. and it most certainly is not the natural progression of things. these are man made.....not natural.

edit: and just to be clear. if things continue unchecked, your little lad is in for a hell of a crappy time when he reaches adulthood, or if not that soon then his own little lads.

The key is education and the countries raising their standards of living by themselves.

See post above for the reason why. The utterly selfish nature of humanity.
Yes it is selfish, its human nature!! Thats what we are, stop pretending to be anything else. We are humans and we adapt and overcome to our own benefit. And for those who say this isnt natural, wake up, we are natural results of evolution and natural selection on this planet and what we then create as a result of that is natural progression. Its not the animals you need to worry about its each other!

Until we have a "world order" we will effectively wipe ourselves out unless we can move to another planet that has natural resources we can use before moving onto the next one.

Yes we can improve things like renewable energy, birth control as well as preservation of species on this planet but i think it terribly naive when i see such flippant posts about how we are plagues on this planet and how we need a plague to wipe us out. Its all tosh and you are hugely hypocritical to think otherwise. Its about survival of the species deep down and its in everyone not just some of us.

Does this mean i dont think we should do anything about it? No of course not but smell the coffee, instead of pointing the finger at each other take a look in the mirror.

the problem isn't necessarily selfishness but rather education or lack thereof and short-sightedness. i fully understand @azazl187's position, i'd do everything in my power to protect my family, as would most (i assume).......but i know that we don't need to strip the rainforests naked, decimate animal populations and poison the oceans to protect mine or anyone elses family. these actions are counter-productive and are not long term sustainable. when eco systems crash and make no mistake that they will - who will suffer the most (initially)....the old and the young....so the little lad he so fervently wants to protect becomes the most vulnerable.

Such an invasive, selfish and hypcritical species.

We need to educate, regulate, punish and a good culling or super disease.

Misanthropes, unite!

While the scenario is hypothetical, why is it selfish to SAVE someone?

Good thing I know this is a lulz. If this were DP or CRAZY I'd be asking when you take a running jump

Because to save someone at the expense of someone else will always be selfish. In this case it's sacrificing 100 lives for 1. How is that not selfish?
