Apple Event - 30th October - 2pm - "There's more in the making"

I was all set to order the iPad Pro 10.5, or the 11" as it is now, but I can't justify spending £900+, going to have to hold off until next year.

£1,448.40 edu pricing for this mac mini.

Hardware
  • 3.2GHz 6‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz)
  • 16GB 2666MHz DDR4
  • 512GB SSD storage

Think I'm going to sit tight for an iMac refresh. Really want the 5k retina in my life.
Apple said they were still using SODIMM on the Mac Mini so base RAM and upgrading it yourself seems cheapest option?

This is a redesign and most welcome.

But tech specs don't provide great value.

The MBA versus the MB are quite alike.

The iPad Pro is a nice redesign but side by side to 2017 isn't that much better.

Now 2019 where you see things like LPDDR4 would be better.

Unless you have an older machine or iPad then the last few years I doubt its value to upgrade.

But even then the difference in size and weight isn't massive.

They need to drop the Macbook price to sub £1000, at least then their lineup makes some sense.

Macbook for lightweight, basic tasks (which you could argue the iPad Pro does better)
Macbook Air for the student/semi-professional
Macbook Pro for the higher end as before

They could remove the Macbook completely now that the iPad Pro uses USB-C with display out. That combined with their keyboard and mouse would be a quality setup. Totally mobile but turns into a 'desktop' at home.

No sorry, try using MS Word properly and iOS deficiencies are exposed.

Yes its a choice between iPad and MB as a complementary device but if you wanted a more capable device the MB would still edge ahead of iPad.

They grind closer to iPad being a full replacement but not there yet.

Was hoping for new CPUs in the iMac at least. In desperate need for a new system and fancied the move from windows.

It is inexcusable - it isn't exactly a very challenging upgrade from what they have now. The only reason not to is that it will embarrass / eclipse some elements of performance of the iMac Pro.

Shame the Mini is so expensive when specced up to a reasonable level. I was considering using it to replace my current 5k iMac plugged in to one of these: https://www.anandtech.com/show/13478/dell-u4919dw-curved-display

Not worth it, it's finally overpriced.

My £650 mini itx build runs rings around a mini.

Yesss I know ur gonna say but it's apple etc apple tax, osx etc. Yeh I know I'm fully invested in the eco system.

But it's now reached the 'not worth it' point.

I am sort of with you on that, I have been holding off for so long, using my 2011 MBP still and really in need of an upgrade. I thought the mini might be the perfect machine. £1429 specified with the 6c i7 and 512ssd. Mmmm...........I am still in two minds. I would upgrade the ram myself, assuming you can do this and its not soldered? I want it for general use, photo editing and maybe a but of light video editing. I had almost made my mind up to build a Windows 10 machine, I am about 50/50 right now.

Can you upgrade the ram yourself? I haven't been able to find anything that confirms this yet.

Do we know if the storage is upgradable or is that a soldered item you need to spec at purchase?

RAM yes - check the product page on apple.com, you can see the SODIMM slots.

SSD no, soldered to the main board.

Tempted to get a iPad pro 11 256gb, replacing my Samsung tabS, battery dies on that so fast now.

Do you guys bother with that Apple care. its like another £100+ ?
