Hi all

Having been burgled 3 times recently (twice whilst renovating and once when completed) I have set up a neighbourhood watch and have 20+ local neighbours on a whats app group.

Unfortunately the house two doors down was burgled in the middle of the afternoon on Tuesday!

I would like to hear what people have in place by way of home/neighbourhood security and any experience with burglaries, police support and Neighbourhood watch etc.

My neighbours are very proactive and are prepared to do everything within our power to make the area safer. The police don't even come out when you have been burgled these days so it falls on us to do more.

Obviously we have an alarm - with dialler built it.
Windows and doors locked.
I have Ring Doorbell and Floodlights also - Better than CCTV as its motion push notifications.
Plenty of external lighting - On dusk till dawn.

The Police aren't doing a good job lately. I think more and more Police are there to stop political stuff. They seem to have plenty of Police to monitor Tommy Robinson 24hrs a day and others the Government gets called to account over.

I would only bother to call the police to say give me a reference number for my insurance claim (legal, unlike Yas876 of course). Not to bother wasting their time or mine coming out as someone might have a political view that needs to be washed off the pavement.

Waste of time.

Try not to make it easy for anyone breaking in to get to a place around the house where they are out of sight and try to keep anything valuable out of easy sight, etc.

Last two incidents of attempted burglary I saw though they plainly didn't give a **** one was trying to open up some double doors with a crowbar in broad daylight and the other while at night was making a lot of noise and was in view of anyone walking past and in a spot covered by CCTV, etc.

There is a reason they are targeting your road maybe its easy to get away from? Maybe lots of German car owners on the road?

In my area they are after German cars mostly, lots of them around here so lots of break ins

What sort of stuff has been stolen?

I guess it goes without saying to hide any valuables, or even get a safe installed somewhere.

I'd imagine the only things thieves are interested in these days are phones/laptops/tablets/jewellery - small/portable items.

Three times in a short period is **** luck. Especially as you said, you've got a good amount of security/deterrents.

Bonfire night is incredibly popular with burglars, lots of noise, flashing lights and people wandering about.

A local CPO told me that external PIR activated lights are a mixed blessing; people get used to them coming on and going off and they just make it easier for the burglar to see what he is doing.

A mate of mine reported his credit cards stolen and got replacements. He now leaves the cancelled cards in a wallet with a few worthless (foreign) notes and a fiver and leaves the wallet on the hall table with a set of keys to his old motor.

As you say, the Police are a waste of a phone call for anything other than a crime report number.

Get a dog.
. . . and leave it Home Alone when you go on holiday.

I live on a rather tough estate numerous break ins on my street in the years I’ve lived here.

Prior to fitting a large dog flap, I used to leave my back door propped open 24/7 in the summer especially.

Never had a problem with break ins.

Maybe something to do with these two? :D

How did they get in and what did you change after each burglary?

You mention locks but everyone has locks on their doors, not all locks (or indeed not all doors) are the same.

Basic things like plants/hedges in front of ground floor window (or even some wooden shutters/panels or metal bars if in central London) can help, likewise putting some trellis on top of fences/walls can help stop them getting into back gardens.

There are plenty of security systems out there that can alert your phone, let you view CCTV remotely etc.. if they've got you three times then I'd definitely look into that.

Which isn't nirmally a deprived ghetto. It tends to be nice areas where people have multiple electronic devices, jewellery, cash.

No where did i say it was a ghetto. I just said to move to better area with potentially less crime.

they been in his gaff 3 times, know they can get away with it and will likley come back again

No. You said move to a better area. No mention of crime levels. Your statement implied better areas have fewer burglaries. This is not the case. Burglars will target better areas for the reasons I've already stated.
