My kid wants my current rig so I was thinking of giving it to him.
Specs are 4770k @ 4.4 on a MSI z87-g45 cooled with AIO H80i
16 GB of DDR 3 running at 1800 (capable of xmp 1,2 but feel it's smoother at 1800)
A Gigabyte G1 Gaming 1070
It drives a 1080p 240hz monitor

I'm not leaping to 2/4k just yet so my frames on the high refresh interest me more ATM.

So as I say my kid wants my rig which I'll give him apart from the monitor and GFX card. He'll run an old used 120hz Samsung monitor and will buy himself a 1060 6GB

That's going to be good enough for him I'd reckon.
I'm planning on going down the Zen+ 2700x road with 470 mobo and my 1070.
Do I need the 2700x or is that wasted electricity/cycles? I do want as high a refresh as I can get.

And don't get me started on kid number Two that wants his old 2500 with gtx 970 upgraded!!!

What has kid 1 currently got? It might be more cost effective to build a 2nd hand machine, unless you had an urge to change anyway.

Welcome to the forum by the way :)

Thanks guys.
He doesn't currently doesn't have a PC. Like I say I'd give him the lot minus the card and screen.
Effectively I would be building a new rig. That's why I may as well go new and more modern/recent.
So the 2700x wouldn't yield me any more frames? Then would going the 2600 road be more cost effective in regard to driving the 240hz screen?
I don't mind paying the extra. I know it would be better for multiple apps like Discord, streaming etc.

its very simple if you want MAX frame rates st 1080p then its either 8700K,9700k or 9900k take your pick but have a loot at the reviews and ask yourself is the extra frame rates worth the cost difference and whether the cost difference could be spent on a better GPU like upgrading your 1070 to a 1080TI.

at 1440p or 4k resolutions no difference between 2700x or 8700k,9900k ect.

remember intel platform has no upgrade path left where with AMD you will ger zen2 or 3700x ect ect next year.

if you stream and game then its either 2700x or 9900k as you want those 2 extra cores.

Thx for the help guys.
I'd rather wait until next year but my kid is pressing me for this rig...lol...bless.
So i'm going to have to go for the upgrade now.
Probs will go 2700x as I'm not giving Intel the 300 spondoolies more for a 9900k over a 2700x.

My advice is plonk a 1200 or something into that AM4 motherboard and wait until the 7nm AMD cpu's come out. Those will likely be very similar to 9900k performance.

That's a good idea.
Looks like I'm going to have to save my 20p coins for a year and then upgrade

You may be surprised how capable a CPU for 75buck can be

Probably hardly notice the difference from the 4770k if you gave it a wee overclock so would make an excellent stop gap processor while you wait. And I think playing with low end stuff is fun :)
